Hi People.

I've got an ATI Radeon 9550 /w 128 MB of RAM. I run Mac OS 10.4.8 with 8.8.1 Kernel on my AMD 64 3000+ system. In the last weeks I used an 15" CRT, and let Mac OS run on its standard resolution (1024x768) at 32bpp using the standard driver (no callisto etc), and with a patches ATIRadeon9700.kext to get QE/CI.

All was fine, altough I just didn't like the monitor (my 19" I used before with Windows died recently). So I bought an Acer 19" LCD.

Setting the Mac OS resolution to 1280x1024x32@60 using the kernel options, I was happy that Mac OS switched to that resolution (because Callisto work only w/o QE/CI for me). Mac OS System Profiler tells me everything is all right. 1280x1024, 32bpp, QE/CI enabled. I was also certain to have bought a good LCD (I saw it by friend and at the store, running perfectly, no color banding that I could see..)

But now.. there is BAD color banding all around now. Everything that should be smooth has band. My emulated Windows too. The real Windows I gave a bit of space, to play games etc, does not have this problem. SO my first thought the screen would be bad is wrong. It is Mac OS using 15 or 16 bpp, altough it tries to make me think otherwise.

For the sake of testing I installed Callisto 3, 5 and 8, and besides getting various extra resolutions, propper Monitor sensing, loosing QE/CI, and all SAYS it would run on 32 bpp, but it just doesn't.

Does anybody know how I get that freakin' d*mn  graphics card run at 32bpp on Mac OS???

Thank you guys,

When you go to System Preferences --> Displays, what is shown in the "Colors:" popup menu on the Display pane? Mine shows "Millions" and is displaying w/o banding. I'm just curious if "Millions" isn't available, or is grayed out, or is selected but truly doesn't seem to be Millions?

...

I have millions of color there. Now i have about 24-bit like gradients and colors, more than 16 bit.
