energy_One
I'm on an AMD64 3000+ with a 40 gig as well as a 200 gig hard drive, trying to triple-boot Windows XP, Gentoo, and OS X (from a 10.4.7 DVD-RW). While in XP, with my copy of PartitionMagic, I was able to create a properly-sized AF partition using the instructions on the official OSx86 web page, when I get to the installation program, neither it nor Disk Utility recognizes my second hard drive (the one with no operating systems on it, currently) as being partitioned at all. It simply appears, with no graphical partitioning scheme (just blank white space). My drives are partitioned as follows... Windows XP / Gentoo / Main Disk / hda: Windows Partition, NTFS Gentoo Boot, ext2 Gentoo Swap Extended, Small Fat Partition Gentoo Root, ext3 Intended OS X Disk / Storage / hdc: AF Partition (intended for OS X base install) NTFS Partition (storage) Extended, Fat32 Partition Now, the weird thing is, Disk Utility seems to see the partitions (other than the extended, of course) on hda, but while it sees hdc, it doesn't seem to see any partitions. Any advice? I read about the patch (which doesn't seem to apply, as I'm using a 10.4.7 disc), and I read somewhere that DVD-RWs were not adviseable for OS X install, but I wanted to check and see if there was something simple that I'm missing, somewhere in the forums, or something obvious that should be jumping out at me. Otherwise, I'm as clueless as the next person. I can't seem to find an answer in either the Wiki or on the forums. BlueAvenue
Here's what i did and what i think you should try. Redo that 1st partition and just make it a plain old FAT32 . Personally to do that quickly i use a Mepis live cd which has QTParted on it which is pretty easy to use. It would take less than 5 mins total time. Then when you are installing use Disk Utility to erase that partition and make it into a Mac partition. Then leave Disk Utility and continue on with the install. Worked for me. macgirl
Don't use Extended or Logical partitions, Mac OS doesn't like them. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/40504-one-hard-drives-partitions-dont-appear/#findComment-289376 Share on other sites
BlueAvenue
I think MacGirl has nailed the real problem. I'm new to Mac,less than a week, but i remember reading that in my preparation for this excursion. When i did mine, also on a second hard drive, i had a primary F32, a primary EXT3, and the rest free space. macgirl
Well I tested several times, some times extended partitions appears but in most cases they not. energy_One
Don't use Extended or Logical partitions, Mac OS doesn't like them. I've tried both this approach and putting a FAT32 partition first, again using PartitionMagic. Maybe the particular software I'm using to partition may be the problem, but I have the same issue currently as before, this time with the following setup on hdc, and the same setup on hda: hdc FAT32 Partition NTFS Storage Partition Note, both primary partitions. Now, Disk Utility is still listing the two logical partitions on hda, as well as all of the others (other than, of course, the Extended partition). Could there be a problem with Disk Utility not seeing hdc properly? Because it's certainly listed, and at the proper size, but again with no visible partitioning scheme. I'll go ahead and try repartitioning with a different piece of software, maybe QTParted or GParted Live Cd, but go ahead and offer any suggestions or comments you folks might have.
