We just got a new Intel iMac this weekend, and I downloaded SheepShaver in the hope that I could be able to play some old Classic games I used to play on my old computer. I took the Mac OS ROM file from the iMac Software Restore CD from my old iMac (G3 333mhz) and restored all the software onto the new volume I created (so I'm running Mac OS 8.6 through SheepShaver).

However, for a some of the games I want to be able to play again, I get the error message "The document "xxx" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found." In fact, although the file should be an application, it shows it as being a document file on the Mac OS 8.6 desktop and Get Info box. I was wondering why this is happening, and what I can do to fix this? The applications that came with the old iMac Software Restore disk will run like normal. Actually the games I mainly wanted are some old games from Ambrosia software (at ambrosiasw.com). So I tried downloading the installer for the games, and launching the installer would that give the meantioned error, and then I tried transferring the game folder from my old iMac to my new one, and launching the game file gives still me the same error. This is really annoying me, because I thought I'd be able to run any classic programs after I thought I had SheepShaver set up.

If anyone can help me out, I'd be extremely grateful.

Thanks,

Corey

I got around this by burning the files I needed (e.g. the installers) onto a CD on Mac OS Xand then copying them from the CD on Mac OS 8.6 when using SheepShaver. I wish there was an easy way so I wouldn't have to waste my CD-R's though :-).

Thanks

Hi,

To get files from and to SheepShaver intact, you can use an extra .dmg file. just make sure you don't mount it in OSX and SheepShaver at the same time.

Recently, there have been some improvements to the SheepShaver source code to repair this problem, but there is no official ready-made build available.

However, if you are on Intel Mac, you can use this one I created:

http://www.open.ou.nl/hsp/Engels/SheepShav...SheepShaver.zip

It is actually a .dmg file, so please change the extension to .dmg, mount it, and replace your current SheepShaver application with this one. It should fix the transfer problems.

Best wishes,

Cat_7

Actually, now that I tried playing the game I wanted to some more (Barrack by Ambrosia SW), I noticed after several levels, some of the sprites freeze up once they appear on the screen. Is there supposed to be any problems with games or graphics in SheepShaver?
