Hello everyone,

Im a complete n00b at this so I figure id ask a couple of questions before I try to install OS X again. I tried to install Mac OS X on a desktop PC, some premade Vaio Desktop with a p4 3.00 Ghz computer, and i was using the JaS 10.4.7 version. It installed everything fine and the first time I rebooted it was doing the setup, like in XP when you first buy the computer, I could hear everything but could see only the pointer, a generally black screen and an large X in the corner, and when i rebooted i had lost windows and mac. So now im going to try and install it on my Avertech laptop, it has a Intel Centrino M processor 1300 (more specs to follow). So I have two questions... First, in the instruction guide in the wiki there is some commands you type in the terminal during installation, (it can be found here http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Simple_Dual_Boot )... what exactly does all that do and is it neccessary?

Second question is, if i install on my laptop with the 10.4.8 version w/ the patches is there any tips or suggestions do you have that would help make it work?

Thanks to anyone who responds and thanks to InsanelyMac as well as JaS. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!

The commands in Terminal are to make the partition that you created for your OSx installation "active".

For the patches.... I would start with SSE3 and Combo Updates only for starters. You can always boot with -v to see what is loading and what isn't post install. That may give you hints for your next install attempt.

What do you mean by sets it as "active", the reason why I ask is last time i installed Mac OS X, as in my above post, I got a "no operating system found" error, would those commands in the terminal lead to this?

Also, when i installed it the first time, and during the install you get to choose what patches you wanna add, (like when you click customize install or something) i just selected all of them to be safe... is that ok?

Thanks again for responding I really appreciate all the help I can get.

No , selecting all the patches can cause software conflicts and failed installations.

Only select the patches you need to get your hardware working. It might be best to start out with only the 10.4.8 update for your cpu type.Once your system is installed and to the desktop you can always install packages for networking or other hardware.
