I had that issue with 10.4.7.

 

You can try mount_smbfs -W WORKGROUP //TheIP/TheShare , and there's a switch for username/password, maybe you can do //Username:password@TheIP or "-o myuser:mypass. I forget the syntax, but it worked here. Sharity also worked, but is also {censored} (IMO). mount_smbfs is the FreeBSD equivalent of Linux' smbmount.

 

10.4.8 fixed the problem. No idea why. I've discovered in the past that OS X is a relatively good and easy server, but a {censored} client. Like Windows, the system often seems to stall while it waits for networking, treating it as a basic IO device rather than something that can be occasionally offline.
