I'm playing around with OSX86 on my PC to convince my wife we need an up-to-date Mac (past our Blue & White G3 which she refuses to use as she considers it to be too slow).

I was not able to get JAS 10.4.8 install going (Froze at bootup) so I tried the Tubgirl 10.4.8 AMD install and was able to install it and boot to the desktop without any issue except:

My ethernet refuses to work. My motherboard has an onboard Yukon 88E0853 chip. I have been through every post I can find with similar topics on InsanelyMac and Google and have tried a number of things with no satisfaction. I am confident my motherboard/chip combination are supported as when I was using the JAS CD the system was able to obtain an IP address when it was still in its non-graphical start-up phase. I have verified my card's hardware hex ID against the info.plist file of the AppleYukon.kext - everything is fine.

The last bit of text I see before the computer goes into GUI mode on boot indicates something along the lines of "IONetworkingfamily.kext cannot load as loaded version 1.5.0 of module com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily differs from the requested version". I seem to have version 1.5.1 of IONetworkingfamily.kext (which is what it says in the info.plist file of IONetworkingfamiliy.kext and also what Pacifist reports). I get a similar error if I try to manually load AppleYukon.kext with kextload (along with some text indicating a link/load error occured and it can't link to the kernel).

I BELIEVE that my ethernet is not working because the IONetworkingfamily.kext is not loading because of a discrepancy between its version and that of module com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily. I am relatively new to Unix but I am guessing that the version 1.5.0 of the com.apple module is compiled into the kernel and is of a different version than the 1.5.1 of my .kext extension. As this isn't loading, my AppleYukon.kext isn't loading and I have no ethernet.

I have tried reinstalling the IONetworkingFamily.kext files from the install DVDs using Pacifist and I have reset the permissions as I have read numerous times on these message boards. ANY IDEAS!?!? PLEASE HELP! I recall reading something on this board indicating that Tub Girl's IONetworkingFamily.Kext is 1.5.0 not 1.5.1 but that doesn't seem to be my case.

THANK YOU!!!

problem seems to be that the IONetworkingfamily.kext isn't properly loading up. Based on

I knew it wasn't the card but rather the IONetworkingFamily.kext that was not loading so another card wouldn't make a difference. I did get it solved though so if anybody is searching these forums:

1. Installed TubGirl 10.4.8 FINAL AMD

2. When it became apparant that IONetworkingFamily.kext wasn't loading, I found another, older, version installed by the TubGirl distribution at /System/Library/Extensions_disabled/Old/

3. I copied that overtop of the IONetworkingFamily.kext at /System/Library/Extensions

4. I used DiskUtility to repair the permissions

5. I restarted. (AppleYukon.kext already had the right hex ID for my networking card)

6. Everything worked.
