HI all, i was wondering what is the best ISOs to download ? From what i read around in this forum, JaS's ISOs seems to be the most popular one. So am i right to say that JaS's iso is sort of like the official one ?

Right now im confused as to which "distro" of ISOs to download. Theres like various different authors besides JaS, and there isn't a centralise documentation as to how each distro differs from the others. Is there a list of Authors and their ISOs out there?

Some of the obvious differences like the OS versions ie 10.4.X , SSE version, AMD version i could understand. But what about keywords like repack, PPF1 patch ? when would you need the Distro with such a patch / feature / or even from a specific author ?

I m not sure where should this thread be posted to, but here seems like a logical place to place it...

Thanks !

Well, here's what I know of it and I'm quite sure there is more (haha or corrections)...

At first there were numerous different "distros," if you will, of OS X. This mainly came from the fact that some were more reliable, hardware compatible (both specifically and over a broad range), or specialized in some way or another. JaS "distros" became the standard because his were available quickly after updates, they were reliable, and he did a good job of including tested solutions for hardware problems. Because of this standardizations other "distros" began to die down. This "distros" included Myzar (10.4.5), HotISO (10.4.4 - 10.4.6?), and probably some others.

Then when we were able to get our hands on the 10.4.8 kernel things changed again. JaS released an SSE3 Intel only version relatively soon after Semthex made his kernel available. This had the option of installing either Semthex's kernel or Mifki's. Obviously, AMD fans soon started work on AMD support in the kernel. As far as I know, Tubgirl was the first person to come out with a distro with some 'beta' support for AMD. Later there was a ppf patch for this distro. (PPF is basically a file that contains data changed between two ISOs. Instead of releasing a whole new disc, and downloading EVERYTHING again, the PPF takes the input of the original ISO and outputs a new one that is completely updated) When Beta9 of Semthex's kernel came out and was tested for a while, JaS released his distro that contains support for SSE2, SSE3, Intel, and AMD. It was soon found out that there were some problems with Natit and permissions, so JaS released a PPF (PPF1) to rectify this.

Currently, to the extent that I am aware, this patched JaS release has the highest degree of hardware compatibility, for all hardware, that we currently have in an installer.

However, the future will be interesting. JaS has announced his retirement. Though there are others in the community who know how to create install discs there will be a number of things contributing to a lack of centralization for a while. First, Leopard is coming up. Second, and in conjunction with the first, I'm sure a number of people will try their hand at it - at the same time. From this selection, somebody will create a name for themselves, as JaS did, and we will have another standard until the next distro artist burns out.

Thank you JaS. The gold standard of wisdom and installer reliability, you shall be missed.

Stephen

PS. I probably missed authors, please feel free to kick in!
