Okay,

I had a flawless 10.4.6 system, but decided to upgrade to 10.4.8 Semthex to support my new Geforce 6600GT. I got that working just fine with Titan.kext.

However, I'm having a problem with my ALC850 onboard audio. I get full working sound, but when I start playing something, it skips and stutters for about a second. Then it's clear as can be. Unless I pause and restart, then I get the stutter. I've tried about evey alternatibe kext out there, and it still does it. Since I have working sound, maybe the audio kext isn't the problem? Any ideas?

Also, I have absolutley no USB support any more, it doesn't show up in the Profiler, and nothing works when I plug in. I installed the USB 2.0 patch on the install DVD, but have nothing.

One thing that I noticed is that my "about mac" now says I have a Celeron D 4.3 GHz, I only have a 3.2 GHz. Could OSX be overclocking my processor, causing instability? Or is this just a common misread?

I don't know what to do. I've ruled out my new video card causing a conflict, because I reinstalled 10.4.6 and everything works fine, with the exception of CI QE. Anyone having similar problems with 10.4.8?

FYI, Here's what I installed:

10.4.8 Combo Update

Semthex kernel

USB 2.0 Fix

About mac screen crash fix

I was able to fix the USB issue with a update .dmg from apple. Worked like a charm.

I still can't get my sound working correctly. I've tried it in AC97 and Azalia mode with no difference. It's weird, it seems like it has trouble initializing whenever it's called upon. It has a short amount of static and skipping, then it's fine unless you pause or skip ahead. I'm wondering if this is some type on hardware address conflict or a problem with some Family kexts I'm not familiar with.

When I play aroung in the Audio MIDI steup, it seems like it's trying to send the sound to other speakers. I only have stereo speakers and I'm set at 2-channel. I was hoping I could just use azalia 2-channel, but I'm not sure if it's even activated right. Is "azalia" suppossed to show up as your default device, or will it always say AC97?

If anyone knows how to get azalia or ac97 on the ACL850 working properly with 10.4.8, please let me know. Thanks!

I've actually tried the other kernels. Mifki kenrnal produces same results. If I stay with the original 10.4.8 kernel, everything crashes.

Basically all I want to know is, if I'm getting my sound to load, yet experience bad sound quality with skipping — is this a sound problem or a sympton of somthing else? Should I give up tinkering with audio and look for a more general system fix?

I've heard of people having trouble getting their sound to load, but not about this skipping problem after it's loaded. Since I'm having no problem loading my ALC850, maybe there is something else that is slowing my system down, causing skipping. I've heard about PCIFamily kexts and the sort, could those have anything to do with poor system performance?

I also had stuttering sound after I've installed the new 10.4.8 JAS DVD. I use USB Audio instead of ALC850, but maybe it helps for you too.

Download "scriptv3d.command.zip - Live updater for 8.8.1 kernel" from http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=36886.

Unzip and start it. This script downloads the latest semthex kernel and installs it. After the reboot - sound works very well with me!!

By the way, I've only installed te Combo Update and the semthex kernel from the 10.4.8 DVD, no USB fix or something else.

I hope this will help you.

Bye Rob
