it seems that if I change the partitioning I hose my 10.4.8 install. However I have 320G of a 400G drive as free space. What can I do? Clone my working install to another drive?

By hose I mean "waiting for boot device"... One can type in hd(0,a)mach_kernel rd=disk0s2 and finally boot but things are still wonky.

I don't quite know if I understood exactly what your looking to do but I just used CloneTool 0.6a and clone my almost full 20G partition which was on a 120G disk to another spare 120G disk and then repartitioned the original drive using the OSX disk utility. Now I cloned it back to my original drive but using the whole drive. So this program might be what your looking for. To find out how it works or if it will work for you, search this forum for clonetool and you'll find a five page or maybe larger by now thread about this prog I recomend you try to read most of it so that you see what people have had trouble with and the exact procedure depending on what you want to do. My procedure was easy because I was using a two disks for the procedure and it work liked a charm. I hope this helps. If not I'll re-read your thread and any new posts tommorow.

Thank you! I will try to find a spare drive to see if I can make this work. Do you dual boot? I think that's part of the monkey wrench that I encountered trying to change the free space on the drive.
