Oops, sorry, I only just noticed this post.

 

It sounds as if your Windows "locale" or "user locale" have become screwed up. First check should be Control Panel / Regional / Location, then Control Panel / Regional / Languages, then try the Advanced tab to ensure you have your non-Unicode language set to your 'normal' language.

 

In the very unlikely event that the system fonts have been damaged, you'll need to copy them off another user's machine. Just depositing them into the Windows\Fonts directory will probably work, since they are already 'installed' in the registry. However if they're not installed you will need to take the "File - Install New Font" option in the Fonts directory view, accessible from the Control Panel. In this instance best to drop them in a temporary directory and install them by selecting them all. If Windows complains that they're already installed, simply copy them manually as before.
