Hello all,

Always jumping from pc to mac (would stick to mac if it wasn't for some pc software I use regularly and that is not available for mac), I want to set up a system to run osx86. I'm not very demanding and I'm on a real tight budget for now. The project is to gradually build a hackintosh that lasts for quite a few years.

Can anyone give comments on the following parts I would start with:

Motherboard: ASRock Conroe 945G-DVI

CPU: INTEL Pentium 4 531 Socket 775, 3.0GHz, FSB800, 1MB Cache

512 MB RAM for now

From my old pc I still have a Benq 1640 DVD writer and 80 GB IDE HDD, and a Apple Keyboard and mouse from my iMac G3...

What about running iLife on this system?

Any toughts welcome, especially on the motherboard!

Thanks a lot,

Rafke

This is a good choice. You can run the GMA950 onboard graphics for as long as you need and add NVidia any time. It will support any socket 775 CPU all the way up to the $1000 extreme editions. LAN is supported natively now. RAM is an issue maxing out at 4GB with only 3.25 GB recognized. (945 chipset limitation). And there are only two (2) PCI slots. So... Populate wisely. If expansion slots are going to be an issue, look to ASUS/ASROCK in the ATX size.

That sounds like a good system. I have a similar setup. I must say, I was amazed at how easy it was to install OSX86 on this computer. Just check the GMA900/950 box when you install, and everything works.

As for running iLife, I run iLife. It runs really well. You can buy it at a shop, or get the install dvd from a friend who has an Intel Mac, and install the packages with Pacifist.

But that's piracy, don't do that ;)

Thanks for the reassurements!

The reason I choose the ASRock Conroe 945G-DVI is indeed for eventually placing a high end processor afterwards, plus it is Vista Premium ready, for the wife.

2 PCI is no problem.

Or are there any ATX Asus/ASRock mobos you would recommend more?

One more question: I don't have any firewire peripherals so I don't need built-in firewire? Just because Apple mentions built-in firewire as a system requirement for osx!

Thanks already for the very useful help,

Rafke
