Does installing Parallels stop CCC or Apple's Disk Restore function working?

With Parallels on a 24" Core2 Duo iMac, both CCC and DR fail to copy a working 10.4.8 install to an external FW disk.

I have used CCC and DR many times before on Macs without problems but this is a new iMac and it just won't clone properly. The cloning appears to complete OK but when I try to boot from the external FW drive, I just get a black screen after open firmware sees the external drive and starts the boot. The files on the FW disk look good and the boot partition is active, etc. I have tried all the other tricks like repairing permissions, running DiskWarrior 4, blessing from Terminal, sacrificing a chicken, but nothing does the trick. The iMac boots perfectly otherwise and Windoze starts normally under Parallels (3016) too. The external drive is known to be good and was formatted from 10.4.8 using Apple's DU.

I guess the next stage is to uninstall Parallels and see if it will clone OK then?
