After many days of try and error ...

... I've got 10.4.1 as well as 10.4.8 for AMD running in VMware and can even install onto the native SATA HD. Yet, whatever I try, running natively is no joy. One or two of the E6300 cores enabled, SATA set to IDE or AHCI, it always hangs after

Waiting for root device ...

Waiting on IOProviderClass ... IOResources ... root-uuid-media

Yet, the sentence "Still waiting ..." doesn't show up, not even after some 20 Minutes.

In the meantime I have 4 different 10.4.8 Install DVDs lying around (2x Jas Intel only, 2x AMD), together with dozens of patches and patch instructions for ICH8 and the 965 chipset.

Unless somebody can tell me how to get this mobo straight, I'd like to tackle the problem a bit more qualified:

- How would I find out about which hardware/vendor IDs to put into the various .kexts? There is some way to find out, instead of guessing, right?

- Somebody experience with running Debug-Kernels and/or using a remote debugging environment?

Update:

After installing 10.4.1 on a physical partition, I could boot with the "platform=X86PC" flag and got up until "Still waiting for root device" appears.

It looks like the 10.4.1 kernel is capable of booting the DG965SS board in X86PC mode (= ACPI off) and lacks the driver for the SATA disk while 10.4.8 has the driver (+ proper Info.plist by semthex) for SATA but lacks the X86PC mode.

Next step would be to compile Darwin's AppleIntelPIIX extension for 10.4.8. Unfortunately, it doesn't compile "out of the box".

My 965 board hangs at the same place.

You can see which dev ids to put into info.plists in kext using Win or Linux.

I have a working vmware install which I dd to my physical partition on my 965 ICH8R SATA drive.

Tried patching the ICH7R kext as you described but no joy either.

My experience compiling the tulip ethernet driver for 10.4.3 and up is it won't make; you have to use xcode tools inside os x. But I haven't been able to get xcode to work in vmware. Could put os x back on my old SSE2 box -- I had given it to the kids for games -- just to compile.

My 965 board hangs at the same place.

Which board exactly? Which version of OS X are your trying?

I haven't been able to get xcode to work in vmware.

Compiling kernels works great here, in 10.4.1 as well as in 10.4.8. Do "Hello World"-type apps work? What#s the exact problem?

Thank you! I was trying to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 in VMWare and was never succeeding! After simply installing the AMD files instead of the Intel ones it worked.

I've the exact same motherboard as you, and will finally be able to play with a Mac. If you get it running natively, please post instructions here!

Thank you again! I'd have never guessed that I needed AMD files to boot into VMWare! :-)

I have the Same board, DG965SS, and the same issue with 10.4.8, 10.4.9, 10.4.10

A lot of people have suggested trying the jmicron fixes that have been discussed for getting other 965 boards to work, but this board doesn't use a jmicron JMB363 controller for the PATA like other 965 boards, it uses an unknown marvell controller.

I have windows installed on my DG965SS, and this is what I come up with for the IDE controller

PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_6101

PCI Vendor 11AB is Marvell

Device 6101 is unknown

So if you had a marvell kext that was suitable for whatever model controller this was, you'd have to put in the dev ID 11AB6101 (or is it 610111AB? I can never remember in the kexts if vendor ID comes first, or devid)... but I don't know if there is a kext out there for a marvell IDE controller, let alone one that would work with whatever model this happens to be... only marvell kexts I can find reference to are for network chips...

Now if someone more knowledgeable than me can figure out just *what* marvell controller Dev 6101 is, and find a suitable marvell kext/driver/whatever already out there, or make one, and patch it into an install DVD, we'd be good :)

Dear all

I have a DG965SS mobo. Tried intalling Kalyway 10.5.1 SSE3 on it after installing Acronis Disk Director 10 and OS selector and following the instructions on setting up dual boot.

I keep getting the waiting for the root device... error

Any suggestions on solving this. By the way I've been using macs for 20 years but quite new on the PC side. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.
