lennyb
I realize that 10.4.3 problem resolution is probably an old issue for most of you. It was rock solid for a year for me on a Dell Inspiron 8600 (NP's MacVidia driver) and I've been waiting for the Jas SSE2 10.4.8 DVD to upgrade. I followed a careful path of patches back then that corrected all the problems I encountered. But over the holidays, things got scrambled in the course of trying to clone the partition from the laptop HD to a USB Storage device. In starting over, I'm apparently not following the post-installation patching steps properly, now, (10.4.3 1099DVD + Maxxuss 8F1111g Tuning Package + MacVidia 1.08 driver + IO80211Family.kext for TrueMobile 1450 wireless + Maxxuss DVDPlayer patch+ ApplePS2 Trackpad patch + Powermanagement Bundle update+ Applejack), because I'm getting a series of problems that weren't there before: 1) With MacVidia 1.08 driver: system freezes at white Apple boot screen most of the time (or after "Loading OSX" prompt) -- unless I use a safe boot. (This can be resolved by removing the MacVidia driver and going back to VESA 3.0. ) 2) The Networking Preferences app crashes (preventing IP changes) -- which is a known issue. But now the original Setup configuration for static IP, DNS, Gateway, etc. isn't recognized unless I use a safe boot (in which case it still works). 3) Installer behaves erratically, occasionally freezing in attempt to install the MacVidia Driver and other packages. 4) Ilife '05 installation must be repeated several times to stick, and after that, Garageband hangs at initialization phase. (Garageband worked flawlessly, before.) 5) Apps randomly fail to open, producing the continuously spinning mouse cursor. 6) System refuses to shut down completely and hangs when user logs out. I've tried fresh installations two times and these problems persist. The system more stable running with a safe boot (the log out, shutdown, and missing TCP/IP settings problems disappear, and fewer applications freeze up). If any wizards like Rammjet are reading this, any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? (I never got the Jas 4.2 patched DVD. Everything (except the crashing Network Preferences) always worked without it. Is there another 10.4.3 patch file that I've lost or forgotten about? (I know the IONetworkingFamily.kext from the Jas 4.2 DVD is supposed to fix the Network Preferences crashes.) Are there known bad KEXTs for Dell Inspiron 8600 and 10.4.3 that I knew enough to remove the first time, and have now forgotten about. Would I be better off starting again from Jas 10.4.6 and not butting my head against the wall? (Also, is there any way to extract KEXTs from a later version DVD without actually installing from it onto a hard disk?) bibendum
I'm no wizard, but as far as extracting kexts from DVDs, Pacifist (look on version tracker) will do that. Why not go for the JaS 10.4.8 DVD and start fresh? Neonkoala
I would recommend the 10.4.6 install as a temporary go between before JaS 10.4.8 comes out. The MacVidia may be due to you using an older version before - I know many people ahve better results with certain versions of it with different cards.
