On my day-old install of JaS 10.4.7, I am getting this error message when booting with -v:

"Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 85"

When booting the normal way, everything stalls at the grey screen with the apple.

OS X is installed on its own Western Digital 40 GB IDE hard drive. Windows is present on a second hard drive. Whenever I want to boot into OS X, I just tell my BIOS to boot from the 40 GB hard drive. I am not using VMware or anything like that.

Previously, this install of OS X had worked fine. Right before starting my computer up and noticing this error, I had taken out of my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card that had always been in my computer and plugged my audio into the integrated SoundMax audio to see if it work in OS X. Little did I know I wouldn't be able to get that far!

The only poor track record this machine has had with OS X is the Pentium 4 530 Prescott CPU it has will not work with SSE3 in OS X. I have to use SSE2. I have a feeling this is due to the Dell motherboard I am using. The hard drive is also around 4 or 5 years old so it wouldn't surprise me if it's starting to fail.
