I've checked the HCL and done a forum search and can't find any sign of the VIA 890 chipset.

I'm buying a new motherboard and graphics card for an OS86 install and since I have 2Gig of DDR ram at home already I'd like to stick with a Mb that supports it.

That's either a 915 chipset or this VIA chipset.

The 915 chipset has some general hardware issues (pciE limitations and no dual core) so I'd like to avoid it if possible.

The VIA mb sounds perfect except for the total lack of mention in the osx86 world.

Specs are:

North Bridge: VIA® P4M890

South Bridge: VIA® VT8237R+

Audio: Realtek ALC655

LAN: VIA® VT6103L 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet PHY

The graphics card I've got in mind is an Evga 7300GT which looks well supported in the HCL using titan.

Any experience with this Mb or chipset combo?

Thanks in advance

Ok fine, I guess I'll have to answer my own questions here. :(

I bought the MB hoping things would go well and it's been a long night (morning? :) ) but I have a working hackintosh.

I'll throw in the details here so anyone else wanting to try this won't have to spend 12 hours fiddling.

Reader's digest version: Jas 10.4.8 reseed, rhine driver, titan for nvidia, SMBIOS.

Big print hardcover version:

I grabbed jas's 10.4.8 reseed iso off my favourite torrent site and that booted/installed just fine.

I selected the VIA ATA option off the DVD as well as semthex's kernel.

USB worked fine during install (mouse, keyboard and thumb drive)

Don't select 'fix USB 2', it breaks USB :)

Now, the weird part of things is on the second reboot after install, the system got stuck on 'waiting on root'

This thread ( http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...ons\.mkext ) suggested booting with -f

This works, if slowing boot down a little.

The same thread suggests adding -f to boot.plist but I haven't tried that yet.

Audio works fine although it doesn't show up in the profiler.

ethernet was fixed after reading this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...%20II&st=60

JAS has compiled a fresh version of that driver and made a pkg install stored here: http://rapidshare.de/files/34533872/Pinxue....X.pkg.zip.html

It didn't install for me though, some sort of error. I used pacifist to extract the contents and installed it manually, that seemed to work fine.

The only oddity here is that it's selecting half duplex 100Mbit which isn't right at all, I'll have to look into why.

About my mac and system profiler weren't working and the howto thread ( http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=34871 ) suggested replacing AppleSMBIOS.kext from

near the bottom of this URL: http://paulicat.freeflux.net/

This fixed both, although there's some odd numbers from the profiler (ram speed and CPU speed)

And last but not least was the Nvidia 7300GT card. This URL http://omni.starchaser.org/titan/ got me the titan kext which turned on full support of the card.

Once all this was done, it got on the internet just fine and downloaded/installed all pending updates.

The box is happily watching a DVD and running clean.

It's been a long night of trial/error to get it this simple, but worth it to have a clean running Hackintosh.
