Hello InsanelyMac team,

I registered in 2022 while reading the macOS Ventura on Dell XPS 17 L702x Optimus thread, but didn’t post at the time. I’m now coming back specifically because I own the Dell XPS 17 L702X 3D variant and I’m running into questions around the discrete NVIDIA GPU driver situation on this particular model.

Since the 3D version has some hardware differences compared to the standard L702X, I’d like to ask a few things in the related thread, but I’m still under new user posting restrictions.

Could a moderator please lift the limits on my account so I can join the discussion?

I’ve updated my signature with my hardware details. Here is the full breakdown for clarity:

Laptop: Dell XPS L702X 3D

CPU: Intel Core i7‑2820QM (2.3 GHz, Turbo up to 3.4 GHz)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M (3 GB DDR3, Fermi, Device ID 10DE‑0DCD)

Motherboard: Dell 03RG89 (Intel HM67)

BIOS: Dell Inc. A19 (Unlocked)

Memory: 32 GB Micron DDR3 (4×8 GB, 1600 MHz)

Display: LG LGD02C5 17.3″ 120Hz 3D Panel (1920×1080)

To answer your question about the NVIDIA configuration on the 3D variant:

The L702X 3D model does not support NVIDIA Optimus technology. Unlike the non‑3D Optimus variants, the 3D version uses a muxed/direct‑output design where the display and HDMI ports are hard‑wired directly to the GT 555M. Consequently, the Intel HD 3000 iGPU is disabled at the hardware/BIOS level and cannot be used for display output. This is why the 3D model requires the 3 GB GT 555M to drive the 120Hz panel, whereas the standard Optimus models rely on the Intel HD 3000 for rendering and switching.

Since the GT 555M is Fermi‑based, I understand that native acceleration is unavailable past High Sierra. My goal is to properly configure the EFI (OpenCore) to handle this muxed setup correctly under Ventura, primarily focusing on getting the display initialized correctly despite the lack of acceleration.

Please let me know if there are any other specifics you need.

Yes, exactly.

Since this is the 3D variant, the Intel HD 3000 is disabled at the BIOS/mux level, and the 120Hz panel is hard-wired directly to the NVIDIA GT 555M. There is no Optimus switching involved—it's a discrete-only setup.

That's precisely why I'm looking into modifying the EFI/BIOS and DSDT to handle the display initialization properly under macOS Ventura.

Actually, the GT 555M is based on the NVIDIA Fermi architecture. The last macOS version to natively support Fermi GPUs with full Metal acceleration is macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), along with the final NVIDIA Web Drivers.

Starting from macOS Mojave (10.14), native Fermi support was completely dropped. While it is technically possible to run newer systems using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) to apply root patches, Fermi cards are classified as non-Metal GPUs. This means you only get extremely basic framebuffer output without any hardware graphics acceleration.

I had Dell Latitude E6430 with Nvidia Fermi graphics chip. Yes, I disabled Intel GPU in BIOS and had full working 10.11.6 ElCapitan.

In Sierra there are some glitches even with Web Drivers, somehow black desktop with good windows. There was no OCLP in that time.

I totally get why you stayed on 10.11.6 — Fermi + Web Drivers on 10.13.6 is notoriously glitchy, and without OCLP back then there was no real fallback.

 

But here's my actual goal: I'm not just considering 10.13.6 — I'm actually trying to push all the way to macOS Ventura 13.7.8.

 

The reason is simple: even 10.13, 10.14, and other 10.x versions are now far too old.

Many modern apps (browsers, dev tools, AI, Steam, etc.) have already dropped support for the entire 10.x line.

Staying on any 10.x system means I'd still be stuck with outdated, insecure, or partially broken software.

Ventura is the oldest macOS version that still gets relatively broader third-party app support compared to the 10.x era.

 

I know Fermi (GT 555M) has zero native acceleration on Ventura and it'll be a framebuffer-only / basic display setup, but my priority is app compatibility rather than graphics performance.

That's why I'm exploring DSDT patching, and OpenCore workarounds to make Ventura boot on this L702X 3D machine at all.

 

Did you ever consider going beyond 10.13.6 toward something like Big Sur or Ventura just for the app ecosystem, despite the lack of GPU acceleration?

You may live without GPU acceleration like I do with my laptop #2. I am just not sure if you may launch Ventura somehow on Fermi.

Forget about DSDT patching, it will not help.

I actually have some positive progress to share — I managed to boot macOS Ventura 13.7.8 on this L702X 3D machine, and it's now running at 1600x900 resolution.

Compared to the default 800x600 @ 1MB VRAM right after installation, this is already a huge improvement in usability

— text is crisp, the UI is scaled properly, and basic desktop navigation is smooth enough for non‑graphic tasks.

 

As you correctly pointed out, the VRAM is still showing only 5MB and there is zero GPU acceleration (no Metal, no Quartz Extreme).

 

Regarding DSDT: I understand your point that patching alone won't magically enable acceleration.

My current DSDT work is purely aimed at cleaning up ACPI errors, fixing embedded controller queries.

It's a complementary step, not a miracle fix.

 

So yes — it boots, it renders at 1600x900, but it's a software‑rendered desktop.

For my use case (SSH, text editing, legacy app testing), even this limited state is valuable.

 

Thanks again for the reality check — it helps me set the right expectations while I keep tweaking the EFI and OpenCore quirks!

Update: Ventura 13.7.8 display progress on Dell XPS L702X 3D (GT 555M only) — and why I’m moving to High Sierra 10.13.6

Quick note first: my machine is the XPS L702X 3D, not the Optimus L702X. On the 3D model the Intel HD 3000 is factory-disabled; only the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M drives the internal panel and HDMI. So there is no iGPU fallback path.

Display progression on Ventura 13.7.8 (OpenCore 1.0.7)

I did get a usable desktop, but only in stages:

  1. 800×600 @ ~1 MB
    Basic/VESA-style output (typically with nv_disable=1 / no real NVIDIA framebuffer stack). Bootable, but almost unusable.

  2. 1280×1024 @ ~5 MB
    Intermediate framebuffer-ish state — better than 800×600, still wrong timings / limited VRAM reporting, not a daily driver.

  3. 1920×1080 @ 3 GB
    With the NVIDIA Web Driver framebuffer stack loaded (NVDAStartupWeb + NVDAResmanWeb + NVDAGF100HalWeb) and the accelerator (GeForceWeb.kext) kept out, I finally got a stable native 1920×1080 desktop, correct EDID / panel mode, and About This Mac reporting the GT 555M with 3 GB VRAM.

So yes: full native resolution on Ventura is possible on this Fermi laptop — but that is not the same as GPU acceleration.

Important: no GPU acceleration on Ventura

Even at 1920×1080@3GB, WindowServer was still doing software compositing (very high CPU on WindowServer, laggy UI, poor daily UX). This is the key reminder for anyone chasing “working graphics” on Ventura with GT 555M:

Native resolution ≠ Metal/OpenGL acceleration.
Framebuffer-only = picture looks right; UI still feels like molasses.

Why acceleration failed (what we actually verified)

I tried the OCLP / Web Drivers route seriously (SSH diagnostics during white/garbled screens, AuxKC rebuilds, WEG flags, npci=0x2000, BAR placement, etc.). Short version of the hard limits:

  • GT 555M is Fermi. Apple never shipped Fermi in a Mac. OCLP’s NVIDIA Web Driver path is aimed at real Mac NVIDIA GPUs (mostly Kepler-era stories), not this laptop’s wiring/driver combo.
  • Loading GeForceWeb.kext (the accelerator) brought MMU / DMA faults (Channel exception / FAULT_PTE), white/garbled screen, etc.
  • A WindowServer-free OpenCL test still failed: buffer write + read-back returned all zeros, while every OpenCL API call reported success. So host↔device DMA / GPU memory management is broken, not “just” the compositor.
  • Kernel logs also showed ABI skew, e.g. unknown IOAccel context types and IOSurface “nonvolatile” skip behavior — classic mismatch between High Sierra–era accelerator (IOAcceleratorFamily2 ~378.x) and the newer userspace / IOSurface stack Ventura needs.
  • Side finding: leftover Tesla Web Driver kexts in /Library/Extensions can break AuxKC linking (_VSLGestalt bind failure) and prevent GeForceWeb from loading at all. Worth cleaning if you experiment — but fixing that still did not make acceleration work on Ventura.

Bottom line for me: on Ventura 13.7.8, GT 555M can do framebuffer / native res, but true GPU acceleration is not achievable with the available Web Driver + OCLP patch set. Not a config.plist tweak left to try.

Downgrade plan: macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

I’ve stopped pursuing Ventura for daily use on this machine and I’m preparing / installing macOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

Why High Sierra:

  • It is the last macOS with official NVIDIA Web Drivers for this class of GPU.
  • On 10.13.6, Web Drivers are a native stack (no Ventura-era IOSurface / accelerator ABI stitching).
  • Goal: keep the XPS usable day-to-day with real GPU-composited UI, which Ventura cannot deliver on GT 555M.
  • Trade-off accepted: older OS, but actually usable graphics.

I’ve built a separate OpenCore 1.0.7 install EFI aimed at 10.13.6 (install-time nv_disable=1, FakeSMC/AICPM path closer to older working USB-EFI, then Web Drivers after install and drop nv_disable).

Happy to share results once High Sierra + Web Drivers are up. If anyone on the Optimus L702X thread has a clean 10.13.6 + GT 555M Web Driver checklist that still works in 2026, I’d appreciate pointers — keeping in mind my 3D unit has no iGPU.
