icq00000
in com.apple.Boot.plist, the parameter -v stands for verbose. say: <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>platform=X86PC -v</string> Today, I made a typo. type -x, so it looks like: <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>platform=X86PC -x -v</string> and when boot again, it says: ..... Checking HFS Plus volume. Checking Extents Overflow file. Checking Catalog file. Checking Catalog hierarchy. Checking volume bitmap. Checking volume information. ..... and a lot of stuff other than normal boot when boot up, the login items do NOT work. for example , I add launchbar to my login items, but launchbar does not work automatically. I have to run it manually. However my graphic card works fine now. it has a bug before. anyone know what -x stand for? Rammjet
-x boots you in safe mode. Safe mode is a GUI environment with reduced functionality (many features disabled) intended for troubleshooting. You do not want to run routinely in safe mode unless you don't want to do much. munky
your gfx card problems - were they glitches and artefacts? in safe mode you might not have Quartz Extreme enabled, so in fact its not fixed, its just not using the features which can cause the artefacts with certain card/driver combinations. icq00000
cool! -x boots me in safe mode! how you get this? is there a reference or manual that explains all the parameters? Yes, glitches and artefacts! now I remove all the ATI* kext files in Extensions, and It works smoothly. but Quartz Extreme is disabled now. my box is an ibm thinkpad t42 2373 with 1.7GHz Pemtium M, Radeon Mobility 9600, Intel Gigabit Network and mac os x 10.4.7 installed.
