xavav
Hey all, So here's my problem usually when I plug in my external WD SSD, it just shows up on the desktop or in Finder like normal. Today. nothing. No icon,it's like it's not even connected. I tried restarting the Mac, switching USB ports, even swapped out the cable. no luck. I’m kinda out of ideas at this point. Anyone know what might be going on or how to get it to show up again? Not sure if it’s relevant, but I’m still on macOS Sonoma, haven’t updated yet (could that be the reason why my external SSD not showing up on Mac?) MacBook Pro (M1) 2020. tadoka
You’re still on Sonoma? Man why? I’ve been on Sequoia since the day it dropped and haven’t had a single issue. Now, I don’t think an SSD not mounting on Mac has much to do with the macOS version. It’s usually the cable, power, file system weirdness, or Finder/Diks Utility problems. That said… if I were in you, I’d still update. Just to rule it out. Sometimes there’s little low-level fixes in updates that aren’t even mentioned in the patch notes. maybe not the cause, but it’s where I’d start anyway. UrbanExplorer7
First thing anyone should do when an external SSD isn’t showing up on Mac is open Disk Utility. That’s always step one. Even if it’s not in Finder or the desktop, there’s a good chance it’ll show up there. Open Disk Utility (9 via Spotlight or in Applications). In the top-left corner, click “View” and choose “Show All Devices”. Not just volumes .all devices. If the SSD is there but grayed out, select it and try Mount button at the top. If Mount doesn’t work or the volume doesn’t show at all, try running First Aid from the same toolbar next to Mount. That can sometimes fix file system errors that prevent mountng. If Disk Utility doesn’t see anything at all that’s when you start looking at cables, power or hardware problems. Let us know what you find in there. That’ll help narrow things down a lot. xavav
thanks for the tip. I do see the SSD in Disk Utility under External. Tried clicking Mount, but nothing happens. Also ran First Aid on it it finished without any issues, but the SSD still won’t mount. Not sure what to try next. I really need some files off it, Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/361359-my-external-ssd-isn%E2%80%99t-showing-up-need-help/#findComment-2837215 Share on other sites
UrbanExplorer7
Alright, so if SSD shows in Disk Utility but doesn’t mount then yeah, it’s probably not a connection issue or some serious hardware failure. More likely it’s a file system problem or the partition table got messed up somehow. any chance maybe you unplugged it without ejecting? That kind of stuff can sometimes cause exactly what you’re seeing. Since you said you really need the files, I’d skip trying to reformat (Erase button) for now. If the Mac can still see the device in Disk Utility, there’s a good chance you can recover the data first. Personally, I’d run a data recovery tool on it. I’ve used Disk Drill a few times in similar situations, just scan the disk and see what it finds. You don’t need the drive to be mounted for it to work. As long as the hardware’s recognized, it should scan fine. Also, do you have access to any other Macs (or Windows/Linux machine)? Might be worth plugging the SSD into something else just to see how it behaves. tadoka
Just a quick thought, have you trid resetting NVRAM/SMC yet? I’ve seen that help when external SSD not showing up on Mac. Here’s how to do it for NVRAM: Shut down your Mac > Turn it back on and hold Command + Option + P + R .> Keep holding for like 20 seconds. You’ll see the screen flicker or hear the startup chime again if your Mac has one. And to reset SMC Shut down your Mac > Hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side, then press and hold the power button > Keep holding all four keys for 10 sec > Release and power it on as usual. Might not solve it, but it’s easy to try and sometimes clears out weird USB bugs. D_Harris_05
@tadoka you were close, but SMC resets don’t apply to Apple Silicon Macs like the M1 MacBook Pro that OPs using. SMC functionality is handled automatically by the system now, so there’s nothing to really reset manually. NVRAM reset is still possible, though technically it’s more symbolic on M1 machines (it happens automatically on reboot). You can try Option + Command + P + R on boot, but macOS doesn’t treat it the same way as Intel Macs. That said, since it’s not a hardware detection issue (since the SSD shows in Disk Utility), I don’t think this is an SMC/NVRAM kind of problem anyway. More likely the file system’s just not mounting cleanly. Still, good to rule out but I wouldn’t expect it to help in this case. 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/361359-my-external-ssd-isn%E2%80%99t-showing-up-need-help/#findComment-2837233 Share on other sites
xavav
Thanks againt. I might give that a shot a bit later today, need to jump out of the house for a bit first. 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/361359-my-external-ssd-isn%E2%80%99t-showing-up-need-help/#findComment-2837234 Share on other sites
PixelDreamer5
Might be a long shot, but have you checked Finder's Preferences? Sometimes external drives don’t show up on the desktop if that box is unchecked. Go to Finder > Settings > General, and make sure External disks is checked under “Show these items on the desktop” Also check the Sidebar tab and check that external drives are enaled there too. It’s a super simple thing but it’s caught me off guard more than once. Edit: Oops, just saw your later post if it’s showing in Disk Utility but won’t mount, probably not a Finder thing. Ignore me 😅 Edited July 16, 2025 by PixelDreamer5 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/361359-my-external-ssd-isn%E2%80%99t-showing-up-need-help/#findComment-2837236 Share on other sites
PixelDreamer5
Okay, follow-up to maybe redeem my last post 😅 Are you using any kind of USB-C hub or adapter between the SSD and your Mac? Like one of those 66-in-1 things with HDMI, SD card slots, Ethernet..? Reason I ask is... I had this issue once, and the problem wasn’t the drive or the Mac it was the hub. The SSD would get power (you could feel it warming up), but macOS wouldn’t detect it at all unless I plugged it in directly or through a different adapter. These cheap hubs are kinda hit-or–miss when it comes to power delivery , especially for high-speed stuff like SSDs. Honestly, Apple’s whole direction lately feels like they want us to buy extra accessories just to do basic stuff. Dongles, hubs, adapters. And then half of them flake out after a year. Anyway, just throwing that out there. xavav
Im back, tried the nvram reset just now, unfortunately… no change. SSD still not showing up on Mac. @PixelDreamer5 nah, I do have a hub but I rarely use iit. For this SSD I usually just plug it straight into the Mac maybe once every couple weeks, that’s it. Just a single USB-C cable, no adapters. I also gave Disk Drill a try like @UrbanExplorer7 suggested. Did a scan and it actually does show all my files. That was a bit of a relief. Only thing is, I need to upgrade to PRO to recover them. Kinda on the fence about that . would rather not drop the money unless I have no other choice, but not ruling it out either. Assuming I do get the files off it, what’s the best move to make the SSD usable again? Just erase it in Disk Utility and reformat it from scratch? UrbanExplorer7
if you manage to get your files off it then I’d just erase the drive and format it from scratch in Disk Utility. That’s the most foolproof fix in this kind of situation. Just click Erase, and choose APFS or exFAT (if you need cross-platform compatibility) Or as an alternative, another route is to try TestDisk/PhotoRec. They’re both free (open-source) tools. TestDisk is mainly for fixing partition tables or recovering deleted partitions. I’m not totally sure it would help in your case, since it doesn’t sound like you deleted a partition, but I dont know, maybe it’ll detect something weird and fix it. PhotoRec is more of a raw file recovery tool. It scans the disk for known file types and recovers whatever it finds. Doesn’t care about file systems. Downside is no folder structure or filenames. Both run in the Terminal and can be kinda clunky to use, so not exactly beginner-friendly, but if your want a free option, might be worth it. xavav
Okay, so I think I fixed it. Short version: I spent around 40 minutes trying to make sense of TestDisk, downloaded it, ran it in Terminal, even opened the manual… and gave up. Didn’t make any sense to me. Maybe I’m just not smart enough for that one 😅 Ended up going back to Disk Drill and just upgraded to PRO (I really needed those files, what can I say). Scanned the SSD, recovered everything to my internal drive, then erased the external SSD in Disk Utilit and copy/pasted everything back onto it. So far it’s working like normal again. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Still don’t really understand why the SSD wasn’t showing up on my Mac in the first place, what exactly the problem was but at least it’s sorted now. Thanks again to everyone who replied. definitely wouldnt,ve gotten this far on my own. 1 Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/361359-my-external-ssd-isn%E2%80%99t-showing-up-need-help/#findComment-2837297 Share on other sites
UrbanExplorer7
Glad to hear it. If you want a little extra peace of mind going forward, you can check the SSD’s S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Drill. Just click on “SMART Monitoring” tab under Extra Tools (you might need to enable it). It’ll show you health indicators and overall status.
