Folks, I have an HP Elitedesk 800 G4 Mini tha originally had a i5 8500T processor on it.

I now have an i7 8700 and it works perfectly, much snappier, but heavy on fan (and noise) as its a 65W processor in a 35W mobo (copper heatsink added)

I'm thinking of swapping it again for a T variant but I also wanted to keep the same level of performance.

I have seen reports of people running i7 9700T so I'll take it for granted that this machine works with a gen 9 (but the outperforms i7 9700T), my question is:

Does it work with an i9 9th gen too or only i5 and i7s? more specifically an i9 9900T?

If not, does it work with an i9 from previous generations?

Everywhere I look people refer to official HP supported list of processors but ofc, it doesnt even show 9th gen, much less the i9s so I need a 1st hand report here.

Thanks!!!

Yes, I referred to that post of yours before deciding on the 8700 vs the 8700T.

In fact it was so hard to find an i7 8700T with a decent price that I took the risk, ignored your post and went for the i7 8700. sorry LOL.

For me its stable, never had any problems but I have 2 issues with it. 1 the fan, 2 coil whine which was introduced once I swapped the CPU.

I tried to look form cpu signatures on the BIOS which could indicate compatibility but I have limited knowledge on this. I found these 2: 000906EAh 000906EBh but I'm not sure how to interpret tit since one is for a i7 8700k and the other for an i3 8100

So, from that first link I assume that this is still an unknown possibility right? (i9 9900t)

BTW, you did an amazing work on this machine @deeveedee, the only reason I have a perfect hackintosh today is due to that.

@CZanoS I'm glad that that you found my EliteDesk 800 G4/G5 Mini thread helpful.  I'm hoping that Apple releases its next macOS 16 with some degree of Intel support, so that the fun continues, but we'll see.

Sounds like you know what you're doing, so I don't have to tell you that coil whine is a warning.  After extensive testing, I have found the i5-8600 (65W TDP) to be a very capable performer on the EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini 35W motherboard.  I have only tested on a single 35W motherboard, so others may find exceptions, but I'd be skeptical of anyone who says that their i7-8700 performs well on the 35W motherboard under extended heavy stress tests.  i5-8600s are now very cheap on EBay and possibly elsewhere.  I just purchased one for $31 USD and routinely see them under $40 USD.

Definitely, moving back to a T before I fry it, also, fan is driving me insane.

Found an i7 9700T with a decent price so I'll stick to it for a while until the upgrade itches return or I have someone reporting a successful i9 9900T

@CZanoS Please read the links that I provided to see why 9th gen  i7 and i9 do not work on G4 Mini Motherboard.
