Hello, I found the same problem...

I deselected the option called "Put my HD in stop" in System Preferences - Energy Save and I put on my tool bar an icon to eject the CD/DVD (to install this icon double click on the file called "Eject.menu" in System\Library\Core Service\Menu Extra

When the disk is inactive and the Finder doesn't respond you can eject the disk without reboot your system.

Bye

Thanks for the advice. I will try that.

Btw do you know what is caused that problem?

Hi,

I looked for this problem in Google

A lot of Mac users (G3-G4 PowerMac) found this error after replacing the original CD/DVD drive with another non-Apple.

It seems that the problem is due to the non-Apple firmware present on non-Apple drives.

So there is nothing we can do about it? It's too bad :happymac:

Mmmm...

Maybe it should be possibile to solve the problem using an original Apple drive or upgrading the firmwave of a Pioneer DVDR with an Apple one but the risks are high and it cannot be done with all drives (You have to use the same model of Apple Superdrive).

I have a NEC DVDR and Apple doesn't use this type of drives... I solved as I described before... when I cannot access to the CD/DVD I eject and reload it...

It takes only few seconds and I don't have to reboot my system...

:)

After using eject, is "Finder" responding again?

Yes... for me it works fine again... As soon as you eject the disc Finder, Disc utility and all other applications that hang return to work without problems...

The system isn't instable... applications don't respond but they aren't instable... they are only busy but (for me) they don't crash...

I hope that it works for you, too.

Bye
