Even though the driver is not for Soundmax 1986a, many people have success getting stero sound out but no sound input using the Azalia method. Follow the Azalia link in my signature. Be sure to read the Appendix at the bottom of the guide first. You have one set of vendor/device id's, but you need a second set and you must arrange them in a particular way.

 

After reading the Appendix, use your numbers and follow the guide at the top. Follow all of the steps.

the only problem is, is that im a complete newbie when it comes to this. Could anyone please take a bit of their time to work out the VEN_ and DEV_... this would be greatly appreciated..

As I said in my previous post, there are two sets of vendor and device ids that you need. There are two different chips on the motherboard that are involved in producing sound. Follow the Azalia guide in my signature and follow the Appendix in the bottom of the link to get both sets of numbers. The Appendix tells you how to combine the numbers to get the strings you need in the guide at the top of that link.
