What is the ideal version? 10.4.6 is running smooth, fast, and stable. This is now my everyday machine! At what point will I start to see my performance drop? I assume there is a point at which osX86 will not be optimal for this machine. Where is the line?

I wouldn't even care to update except for 2 concerns:

-latest security fixes

-iTunes 7 (therefore QuickTime7) to use sync my iPod (i have a g5 already, so this is more of a wish)

My specs:

thinkpad t42

pentium M 1.7 (sse2)

512mb ram

radeon mobility 7500 32mb AGP

10.4.8 for SSE2 will be out soon. In fact, I've checked the beta 9 kernel from Semthex and it runs quite smoothly. In that kernel, there are new SSE3 instructions emulated and oddly enough, it even felt faster. (I didn't run any benchmarks, though) iTunes 7 didn't work on my installation, but I didn't tweak it much.

Some guys report that they're already able to run iTunes on SSE2.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't JaS released a 10.4.8 a while ago? Am I missing something here? smile.gif

JaS has released a SSE2 10.4.8 update with the 8.8.1 kernel v9. from Semthex. The kernel is beta as of now. (He even describes it as experimental but I think it is quite stable.)

There isn't any final version of the 8.8.1 kernel, so JaS didn't yet release a final installer for SSE2.

Two questions:

1. Are any of the first Intel chipped Mac's sse2? Or have they been sse3 from the very start?

2. If any were sse2, then as long as the official osx is backwards compatible with the first Intel Mac's, then theoretically I should keep updating right??????

In other words, the new sse2 update patches (mentioned on this form) are not completely unnatural or foreign to my machine and theoretically, should run smooth (once the kinks are worked out).

Or..... if Intel Mac's were never sse2.......back to my original question:

When should I stop? (balancing speed, performance, security, etc). Itunes 7.x would be nice, but not at the cost of taxing my cpu upwards of 50% just to play an mp3.

Any guidance is appreciated.

p.s. I'm sure the "smart guys" that do all the heavy lifting (making osx86 updates and patches) will make every version work on my box (and I appreciate everyones effort). But I'm wondering when I will get performance degradation as a result of having the latest version.

Apple has only ever produced SSE3 Intel computers. They are starting to not compile apps for SSE2 instructions - like iTunes which has an out-of-memory error when run on an SSE2 computer. The only solution being to convert iTunes to a PPC app and run it under Rosetta.

I'm betting they will be doing a lot more of this in the future.
