aorchard
hi there, I installed Tranmission yesterday - just to see what it looks like .... and since doing so have had nothing but kernel panics (thought it was and still not sure if it is a virus) Ive copied and pasted my panic.log here and am hoping that some genius out there could shine some light on my problem and advise whether I need to speak to apple and send this to them or whether its something I can fix myself help would be much appreciated as I have spent half the night reading up on this and trying to remedy thanks Andy Sun Sep 24 23:35:13 2006 panic(cpu 1 caller 0x0019CADF): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, Type 14=page fault), registers: CR0: 0x8001003b, CR2: 0x656369e6, CR3: 0x00da6000, CR4: 0x000006a0 EAX: 0x00000002, EBX: 0x24edbe04, ECX: 0x00000001, EDX: 0x24edbe04 ESP: 0x656369e6, EBP: 0x24edbdd4, ESI: 0x65636976, EDI: 0x65636976 EFL: 0x00010202, EIP: 0x001d7b3d, CS: 0x00000008, DS: 0x00000010 Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x24edbc34 : 0x128b5e (0x3bc46c 0x24edbc58 0x131bbc 0x0) 0x24edbc74 : 0x19cadf (0x3c18e4 0x1 0xe 0x3c169c) 0x24edbd24 : 0x197c7d (0x24edbd38 0x24edbdd4 0x1d7b3d 0x48) 0x24edbd30 : 0x1d7b3d (0x48 0x10 0x10 0x10) 0x24edbdd4 : 0x1d2193 (0x65636976 0x2 0x24edbe04 0x3ad3fc) 0x24edbe24 : 0x1c532c (0x65636976 0x2 0x72655343 0x32494f49) 0x24edbe44 : 0x3237dd (0x65636976 0x2 0x3532b50 0x24edbe74) 0x24edbe64 : 0x370bca (0x3532b50 0xe00002db 0x0 0x0) 0x24edbef4 : 0x371332 (0x4963a0 0x36b0900 0x496240 0x496238) 0x24edbf64 : 0x3a98ab (0x44d3c0 0xee6b280 0x24edbf84 0x198ce5) 0x24edbf84 : 0x13d683 (0x350a200 0x30002 0x0 0x0) 0x24edbfd4 : 0x197b19 (0x0 0x0 0x4be7ca8 0x24edbe04) Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0x0 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.7.1: Wed Jun 7 16:19:56 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.9.72.obj~2/RELEASE_I386 ********* Sun Dec 10 12:42:49 2006 panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001A3135): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault), registers: CR0: 0x80010033, CR2: 0x6d0110b0, CR3: 0x00dc0000, CR4: 0x000006e0 EAX: 0x6d0110b0, EBX: 0x015b3e90, ECX: 0x04f3c458, EDX: 0x015b3e98 CR2: 0x6d0110b0, EBP: 0x25263bb8, ESI: 0x02bd0000, EDI: 0x00000000 EFL: 0x00010202, EIP: 0x0014134b, CS: 0x00000008, DS: 0x25260010 Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x252639b8 : 0x128d1f (0x3c9540 0x252639dc 0x131df4 0x0) 0x252639f8 : 0x1a3135 (0x3cf1f4 0x0 0xe 0x3cea24) 0x25263b08 : 0x19a8d4 (0x25263b18 0x25263ce8 0xe 0x48) 0x25263bb8 : 0x141728 (0x15b3e90 0x1 0x25263be8 0x199c36) 0x25263bd8 : 0x16396f (0x15b3e90 0x473c370 0x25263c18 0x199d39) 0x25263bf8 : 0x163ef1 (0x15b3e90 0x1 0x25263c18 0x12f2d20) 0x25263c38 : 0x16a564 (0x2bd0000 0x0 0x0 0x25263d0c) 0x25263d28 : 0x18307c (0x473c370 0x92bce000 0x0 0x2000) 0x25263d78 : 0x156315 (0x473c370 0x92bce000 0x2000 0x4fa57b4) 0x25263db8 : 0x12b4da (0x47cfda4 0x4fa5798 0x0 0x0) 0x25263df8 : 0x124b2b (0x47cfd00 0x0 0x28 0x25263edc) 0x25263f08 : 0x1955a1 (0x25263f44 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x25263fc8 : 0x19ad4e (0x4a72018 0x0 0x19d0b5 0x4a72018) No mapping exists for frame pointer Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0xbffff798 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.1: Mon Sep 25 19:42:00 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.13.8.obj~1/RELEASE_I386 ********* Sun Dec 10 22:35:37 2006 panic(cpu 1 caller 0x001A3135): Unresolved kernel trap (CPU 1, Type 14=page fault), registers: CR0: 0x8001003b, CR2: 0x14d2f290, CR3: 0x00dc0000, CR4: 0x000006e0 EAX: 0x14d2f290, EBX: 0x04d7f5d8, ECX: 0x00463200, EDX: 0x04d580b4 CR2: 0x14d2f290, EBP: 0x2517b608, ESI: 0x2517b6b8, EDI: 0x04d7f5e0 EFL: 0x00010206, EIP: 0x00158e3e, CS: 0x00000004, DS: 0x0000000c Backtrace, Format - Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x2517b458 : 0x128d1f (0x3c9540 0x2517b47c 0x131df4 0x0) 0x2517b498 : 0x1a3135 (0x3cf1f4 0x1 0xe 0x3cea24) 0x2517b5a8 : 0x19a8d4 (0x2517b5c0 0x206 0x2517b618 0x15a995) 0x2517b608 : 0x175c17 (0x14d2f290 0x287 0x2517b658 0x140860) 0x2517b648 : 0x358911 (0x4d7f5d8 0x0 0x2517b678 0x1c3c84) 0x2517b678 : 0x1d0426 (0x4d80dec 0x0 0x0 0x2) 0x2517b6d8 : 0x1d0584 (0x3e12ef4 0x3811c10 0x0 0x4657a0) 0x2517b728 : 0x1d1f21 (0x1 0x43f340 0x764fe976 0x20) 0x2517b788 : 0x3b369c80 (0x0 0x34 0x2517b7c8 0x605fa88) 0x2517b828 : 0x3b36b910 (0x4053c04 0x1c04e7 0x13000 0x526c294) 0x2517bad8 : 0x1e2df1 (0x2517baf8 0x2517bb0c 0x2517bf18 0x0) 0x2517bb28 : 0x1cab0b (0x526c294 0x2517bddc 0x2517bef0 0x2517bf18) 0x2517bb98 : 0x1cb331 (0x2517bdc4 0x100 0x2517bde4 0x0) 0x2517bc48 : 0x1d7040 (0x2517bdc4 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x2517bd78 : 0x1d74a1 (0x3dbafc 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x2517bf38 : 0x1d7536 (0x3dbafc 0x0 0x0 0x0) Backtrace continues... bibendum
I don't know what kind of support you'd get from Apple since you're running an unauthorized hacked version of their operating system, but I can tell you it's not a virus. Plus, having used Transmission before, I don't believe it "installs" anything, it's just a program that runs. Are you running it when you get the panics? Is it a universal version? aorchard
After a bit more research I found this forum entry http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.h...83585&sid=1 am i therefore correct in assuming that this is related to my 2gb ram? If so I have had that installed for a couple of months now and have never had any problems until yesterday. -- UPDATE -- I bought memtest and ran it to find these results - unfortunately I dont have a clue what it means or what i need to do. Im guessing from all the failures that my extra gig of ram has gone crazy. Patrick Thanks for getting back to me. I bought this computer from an Apple Reseller and the OSX was pre-installed. The only thing I can think of is that I am on a MacBook Pro and installed BootCamp and have Windows XP Professional installed. The problem occurred when Transmission was running. I have since deleted it and all of the torrents that were downloading (youre right it doesnt install anything). I was getting the torrents from torrentspy at the time and it was whilst on their website that this happened (it has since happened 3 times - just randomly without me running / doing anything in particular). I see on their site that there have been virus coming from their 3rd party advertisers. I know that mac's arent meant to get viruses but. 1. Ive got windows installed too 2. I read some articles about dmg files and how they can be used to activate kernel panics. Rammjet
Ahh, part of the confusion is that you posted in the Hackintosh section of the board, not the real Mac section. Anyway, looks like your RAM is failing its tests. I would replace the RAM or take it back for service. I only saw post-installation discussion. Ok will remove the RAM - do you suggest removing and plugging back in and see how it goes (since Ive had 2 months of fine sailing with it) or do you think remove and take it back to apple reseller and get an apple approved one (if it isnt already) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35509-kernel-panic-torrent/#findComment-252710 Share on other sites
Rammjet
Replugging it probably won't help. but it will only take a few minutes, so try it anyway. then run Memtest again and see if it passes. Take or send the RAM back to where you bought it and tell them it seems to be defective. They should test it to verify and if they agree, they should replace it for free after only 2 months. aorchard
Replugging it probably won't help. but it will only take a few minutes, so try it anyway. then run Memtest again and see if it passes. (Ive been working away for 2 hours on this now with no kernel panic - but then again im not using dreamweaver / photoshop etc. - could it be when more memory is required to run an application it causes the ram to fail and thus generates the kernel panic?) aorchard
just thought id update this - always frustrating when you find a forum thread (even if theyre not clever enough to add it to the right section) and the person hasnt added the solution / cause etc Took back to apple reseller and was told I would need to leave it with them for over a week - said theres no option for that since its my only computer and im a designer Ran memtest in front of the guy and told him from all the stuff I had read I thought it was RAM based. Put in new ram and it worked fine. Thought the fault was therefore dodgy ram. Put ram in other slot and the computer would switch on but wouldnt do anything. PROBLEM = logic board is stuffed and they will replace it with a new one So if you are having this problem take out your ram and put it in the other slot and then run memtest and see if it comes back ok - if so your logicboard / logic board has probably gone too Edited December 13, 2006 by aorchard Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35509-kernel-panic-torrent/#findComment-254275 Share on other sites
