David Morris
I'm here because I want to build a Hackintosh during my upgrade of motherboard and CPU on my current Windows PC. I've wanted to build a Hackintosh for a long time now, and get back to using MacOSX as my daily driver OS for most things, but I still need Windows because of the one video game I like to play almost daily, and the Windows only CAD program I have spent the last 20 years learning how to use, and can't afford the time or money to switch to a different CAD program. So, even though I just placed an order for a brand new M1 powered MacBook Pro 13 inch for the wife, and we both upgraded to the iPhone13 a few weeks ago, I still need and want a semi powerful Windows gaming PC, that is as advanced as possible, so that I won't need to upgrade or replace it too soon. I already have a Radeon RX580 video card, which I think is well supported for Hackintosh use, and it is "good enough" for the one video game that I play. I'm planning to replace my motherboard & CPU, plus probably get faster RAM that works best with the motherboard choice. My goal is a multi-boot system with Windows10, MacOSX (latest version possible that is rock solid stable and easy to set up), and possibly a third partition, or drive/SSD, to boot up one of the many Linux distro's. I'm a 65 year old geek that started using computers in the 80's with a Commodore Amiga (which is why I know enough about computers to be dangerous), and I have built several Windows PC's over the years, so I'm capable of downloading and installing BIOS updates, entering command line instructions (if they are clearly written out for me to follow), and carefully assembling hardware without damaging it. I'm looking for advice on which mobo, cpu and RAM to purchase that will allow me to upgrade to a Hackintosh build that is the easiest and most stable to install and use now, and hopefully for a few years into the future. I hope to be using MacOSX most of the time, but will need to also use Windows daily, or almost daily for an hour or three. I know this is not the correct place to place a request for advice, but it is the only forum I can post to today, and I'm an impatient sort of person who want to order my parts before the Christmas sales are all gone. Edit: I don't have a strong preference, but I'm leaning toward a Ryzen CPU, unless that makes it harder to accomplish my goals. I'm happy with my 9 month old ASUS Ryzen 7 4000 series laptop with dedicated nVidia video card. miliuco
@David Morris Wellcome to the aged hackintosh friends! Of course you can have a Ryzen Hackintosh but, as novice, AMD CPUs require more work than Intel CPUs, sure. I recommend you to start with Intel, Z390-Z490-Z590 motherboards and 9th, 10th or 11th gen. CPUs. RAM can be 2133 or above. That RX580 you have is a good choice for macOS and for Windows also, I have one and I'm very satisfied with its capabilities. Disks must be SATA or M2. Look at the forum for posts about builds and guides. deric
RX580 is a good choice, be sure it's not 2048SP version. Intel CPU 8 to 10 Gen for iGPU + dGPU support. Don't go with AMD CPU.
