Hello.

About a month before, I got a new laptop.

However, the default ssd was non nvme and 128gb, so I replaced it with Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500gb. (980 is dramless and 980 pro is too expensive)

First, I installed windows and installed samsung magician, but no update available.

So i just tried to install big sur, and it succeeded.

TL;DR: If your 970 Evo+ box is portrait(not landscape), then no need to fw update.

This is because my 970 evo+ was using elpis controller. The elpis controller is the one in 980 Pro. It supports both pcie 4 and 3, so samsung also changed the controller of 970 evo+ from phoenix to elpis.

You can easily tell which controller your ssd is using.

If your SSD box is landscape, it uses Phoenix controller. You need to fw update or kp encountered.

If it is portrait, it uses Elpis controller. No need to fw update.

If you bought it recently, it is likely that your ssd uses elpis.
