So, I updated 2 days ago, and everything was going OK, except for the Safari issue and Dashboard issue that got cleared up. Today, I clicked on Finder and it crashed. Figuring that I could just reinstall it from the Install DVD, I tried that, rebooted, repaired permissions, and still nothing.

Im loading the install DVD in Pacifist again to see if theres anything else that I could reload that is related to finder.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

So far I have reinstalled just about every finder-related thing I could find. its actually slightly annoying.

I cant even install a finder replacement, because theres no finder window for me to move files with. I dont want to do a complete reinstall, because I would lose about 20 gigs of music, and I dont really have anywhere to put it.

If you delete or move the /Library/Receipts folder, you might trick the install DVD to install over top of your installation and not disturb your existing personal data. Any patches you did would probably need to be repeated, unless maybe you backed up your Extensions folder. If you do the Extensions thing, be sure to delete the Extensions. mkext and Extensions.kextcache.

Others had reported it working except for a bug with Safari, and since I dont use Safari, I thought it would be safe. The computer is no less functional than usual right now, except for the lack of Finder. Im doubtful that this is an issue with the Security Update itself, since, if it were, it should have cropped up almost immediately, not 2 days after.

do you think it would be possible to trick Pacifist to re-install everything over the top of this installation? ideally that is what I would like to do, since I dont even know how I would get all my music off at this point, without Finder working.

it would be a shame to lose all of really. However, if need be, I could always reload most of it from CD.

Pacifist should work, but if Finder isn't working, how can you operate Pacifist?

You can copy/delete things using Terminal or from single-user mode (both command line)

Install DVD doesn't care about your Finder. And as long as you don't use Disk Utility, the install DVD will just install its files and not do anything to other files. But it won't install if it sees the receipts.

Im using an external application launcher. Although Pacifist crashes after about 5 minutes of use. and it only opens the install DVD, nothing else.

So, if I used Macdrive in Windows to delete the reciepts files, and saved the appropriate .kexts that I needed to make my sound and other various things work, it would just leave everything else on the drive alone?

I might just have to try that.
