duggyb
Well i got my JaS 10.4.8 DVD burnt the other day and went to install it lastnight....all seemed well i booted my DVD amd go to the disk utilty picked the partition(unformatted partition i made when i started windows) namd it "osxdisk" and then clicked Erase...it went for about 2 seconds then said Erase Failed...so i click ok and then the partitions on the side menu dissapeared and it just showed my WHOLE hard drive.....so i shut my computer down and rebooted hoping to boot back into windows XP and come on here and get more help.....well no...now my computer just hangs at the black screen after the bios Logo..the one with the little blinking cursor...the cursor blink for about 6 seconds then moves down about 5 lines and just sits there and blinks and blinks for no end...usually right after the cursor drops down is when the Windows XP loading screen appears... so i threw in my XP disc and went to recovery console and went to do a CHKDSK command....but it says the drive is damaged or can not be found.....i also get the same error when i try the FIXBOOT command....but when i try the FIXMBR command it says i have a corrupt MBR command but if i am trying to access the partitions do not do it....so i just left it alone.. does anyone know what i could to do to get access back to my windows XP data?....i really dont think it got corrupt becuase the thing was only on for like 2 seconds before it failed. i wondered if maybe the first couple of files got written..and now the computer doesnt know which OS to attempt to boot....so i thought maybe if i used the software that the dual boot people here use i could gain access to my XP parition...anyone agree? if anyone knows ANYTHING please let me know....also my computer specs are listed below Asus P4P800-SE Motherboard Intel Pentium 4 3.0E(SSE3) 1/gb of Ultra PC3200 RAM BFG 6600GT AGP Video Card Seagate 120GB Barracude 7200 IDE Hard Drive Pioneer 16X DL DVD Drive Plextor CDRW Drive THNX Duggy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/ Share on other sites

Rammjet
If you boot the install DVD again, and go to Disk Utility, are the partitions still missing? While booted into the install DVD, what happens if you go to Terminal and type: fdisk -u /dev/rdisk0 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-248193 Share on other sites
duggyb
no the partitions dont show up anymore.. if i enter that line of code in the terminal...it asks me if i want to write a new MBR or something like that...i hit yes...and nothing appeard to happen...so i went back to the disk utility....and there is still no partitions there. also now when i bootup...just trying to boot my HD...i get a B0 Error and the system is halted there THNX Duggy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-248421 Share on other sites

Yes, need to boot after that. now when i bootup...just trying to boot my HD...i get a B0 Error and the system is halted there OK, good - means need to set partition active. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22844 i used fixmbr from rapair xp boot disk, and it worked... u seem to have no other choice anyways... "fdisk -u" command is OSX equivalent of fixmbr. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-248565 Share on other sites
duggyb
well that all goes well until i hit the "p" button in fdisk...my table comes up blank..all 4 say they are unused without nothing on them.....whats with that? so just out of curiosity i set it to "f 1" and it set it as active but when i typed "write" it gave me a access denied error... also when the error pops up about the MBR am i suppose to say Yes...or No? now i also remember people talking about some 0xA stuff..etc...and i notice my signature is 0x0...does this have anything to do with it. also is there a way i could use my windows XP disk to do this....becuase i decided i dont want OSX on the partition anyways)and since the installed failed it dont matter).....i am just gunna install OSX on another seperate 30GB HD..so i can save this hassle and keep more room for windows XP THNX Duggy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-248973 Share on other sites
Rammjet
Sounds like you can use anything you like. If your partitions are empty... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-248979 Share on other sites

Rammjet
I'm saying I think your XP partition is gone based on info you have provided. If true, you can use any utility you want to reformat and reinstall. Rammjet
Data is probably there, but all definition of partitions is probably gone (MBR is empty?). I've seen a Windows utility to rebuild partition data but don't remember name right now (sorry - try Google: partition data rebuild). Otherwise, a bootable data recovery utility could be useful. duggyb
well i bit the bullit tonight...and decided i am wasting more time trying to get my XP partition to boot...then it would be to format...so i took what i had backed up for data(about 75% of what i wanted)..and reformatted..........next time i wont be so stupid as to install it on the same drive as my XP....30gb IBM Desktar....OSX is headed your way now! although i never accomplised my goal...i gotta thanks Ramjett...he has helped me alot..and teached me lot actually.....i should be able to dual boot now next time with what i have learned THNX Duggy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34949-bad-install-problems/#findComment-249622 Share on other sites
