I got kinda the same sloppy performance when playing DivX files with VLC or something else. Don't know what the problem is, in Windows they would play with no problems at all. I got a P4 2.0 Ghz OC to 2.4 and a Geforce 6600GT graphics card.

I would also love to get my DivX movies running perfect on my Mac (version: 10.4.7). So poor performance right now, cant go fullscreen, only original size. Don't think my hardware is the problem :).

Running SSE3 or SSE2?

In 10.4.7, there is no hardware acceleration for your video card. If you added Macvidia, then there is no QE/CI support. If you did not add Macvidia, you are using generic VESA drivers that report QE/CI but get no hardware acceleration for things like OpenGL and others. Running under SSE2 just adds to the problem.

If running SSE3, then you can probably run the new 10.4.8 and the new kernel. People have gotten full capability in their Nvidia/Geforce cards under the new kernel and using Natit or Titan.

If running SSE3, then have a look at the 10.4.8 link and the Video link (for Natit and Titan) in my signature.

Also, getting the absolute latest version of VLC from a nightly build can help - nightly build

Hmm I got a Pentium 4 Northwood, isn't it that Intel offers SSE3 from Prescott processors and further or something? I think I only got SSE2 then. Not sure, still looking on Wiki and stuff, but I doubt I have SSE3.

Edit: Pretty clear I don't have SSE3, Northwood only goes upto SSE2. Starts from Prescott.

So if I install the new 10.4.8 for SSE2 that doesn't have the kernel I won't get any better performance? (link: http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2...e3-is-out.html)

Damn I should get an SSE3 CPU, but I'd probably also have to get a new mobo. Will there be a new kernel for SSE2's also or I shouldn't hope on it?

Download and run CPU-Z in Windows.

and/or type the following in Terminal: sysctl machdep.cpu.features

There is ongoing work to create a new 8.8.1 kernel for SSE2, but just as in the old kernel, it requires emulation of SSE3 instructions so is slower.
