hiroo
ok, this is a stupid question, but i brought my hackintosh system over to my sister's to finish a project over the weekend and hooked up her monitor and keyboard. problem is, her LCD is XGA 1024x768 whereas the computer to set to talk to my 20" LCD 1680x1050. So, after the grey apple screen it switches to the desktop at high res and then the monitor stops displaying (signal out of range). How can I get back to a low-res so I can see enough to set things straight. sort of like windows safe mode? thanks. Please respond soon, b/c i have to finish this project for a wedding tomorrow. Guest bikedude880
Boot with -x It will take you into safe mode where you can make the appropriate changes. If that fails, there is another option that you can pass at the bootloader that will force a certain resolution to be used. Good luck! hiroo
i've tried -x and it does the same thing. holding down shift doesn't boot to safe mode either. what is the bootloader option to force a display res? Guest bikedude880
Check out this post, it should help: 10.4.5 - "Out of Range" Don't mind the title, it should work. You should probably also set it in /Library/System/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.boot.plist . That thread shows you what to put in. Mess around a bit with different resolutions and refresh rates (start with 60 though, as that is the default for most monitors.) EDIT: This is also another good resource: Changing resolution forces safe boot Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/34711-swapped-to-lower-res-monitor-wont-display-how-to-lower-res/#findComment-246284 Share on other sites
hiroo
ok, finally got it. i tried the "Graphics Mode"="1024x768" at the boot prompt without results. then edited the boot.plist without results. then finally realized that she had her monitor hooked up through a switcher and i think that was preventing detection of the monitor res. thanks for all the help. lesson: "sometimes it's the hardware."
