Okay, my original plan was to buy a new Mac Pro some time in the upcoming year. I realised, however, that what I really want to do is build my own computer, and dual boot it Mac/Windows, as I'm currently running a PowerBook, I don't want to give up Mac OS X's functionality, at all, so I'm looking to build a fairly powerful PC, preferably only with parts that will be supported out of the box.

I'm probably looking to get a decent Core2 CPU (Probably the 2.67Ghz, as the XE is bloody expensive @_@), a good 2-4Gb of RAM, and an ATI X1900 (if compatible, may splash out for a better card, depending on budget and compatability). Am I right in thinking that the motherboard and processor are the only things I really have to worry about, and that any Core2 CPU should be fine?

If so, could someone suggest a decent mobo that will work with not too much tweaking?

If not, could someone just give me a general idea of what CPU/GPU/RAM/Mobo/etc I should be buying o.o?

Thanks loads for any help anyone may give ^^;

The wiki (http://wiki.insanelymac.com) has a hardware compatibility list for each build of OS X.

I wonder though - if you're going to spend so much anyway, why not just buy a real mac? I know you want to build one, but if you buy a real one you'll never have to worry about compatibility, finding drivers or doing any tweaking - it just works.

That's what I've been thinking, there's still a question of whether or not I'll decide to do it, though I'm looking to spend about £1000 tops on the machine, and unless I want an iMac, which I don't, I'd be looking at about £1300-£1500 for the Mac Pro. Plus there's just the principle of the thing, I want something customised, I've wanted to build a machine from scratch for too long now =/
