Gallina
Hello to everyone, i'm a musician really really tired by windows, and I was looking around for some valid alternatives. I cant for now afford a mac, so I'll need to stick with this hw: a nf470 ultra MB from abit, amd 4200x2, 2 gig of Ram and an x800gto2. I cant use linux music distros because I've got an RME fireface800 audio interface, which is not supported by alsa (RME doesn't provide information about this piece of HW). So my only option to leave Bill's SO is to try to install OSx, but I have just one question: at the end of the process, If everything has gone right, will you u have a full-power machine which can be as fast as it was in windows or will you remain with something which is not fully supported by the S.O.? Sorry for my bad english, I hope you've undestood what I mean to say! :-) Many thanks for replies! Korrupted
If you plan on using this for professional purposes, I don't advise it.. But if you mean making music as a hobby, then yeah, osx86 can be used for a lot of things, if you have compatible hardware. Rammjet
On the plus side, it looks like RME has drivers for your audio device. On the negative side, nForce4 SATA is hard to get working. Might have to use regular PATA drives. Sometimes problems with the x2 processors and you might have to disable one core. You might have tiny artifacts on your screen when you move the mouse because video drivers are not completely working. But the machine should still be very quick. bibendum
To my mind, this will be a hobbiest machine - it's fun to tinker with, but not reliable in a professional sense. I've got issues that I've posted here, but can't find any solution for and I have one of the more "compatible systems"... Gallina
Thanks for every one replying! Anyway, I discovered around an old 40gb Pata drive, so I've tried to install Osx, I was too curious :-) My Mb is a nf 570ultra no 470, sorry for the mistake. Now I can enter in osx, graphic is ok (dont know if ce/qi is function i dont know how to check), safari loads but i cant configure the network (I'm using a router, i've got all setted up, but the system continues to tell me that my network cable is disconnected). Any advice for this? Also, when the system is loading, he tries to load a "diskbar" but fails. Many thanks for your replies again! I had the exact same problem with it saying the ethernet cable is disconnected. Turns out with the right 'driver/patch' (In my case Realtek) it works fine. Find out what network controller you have and do a little searching here once you know what it is for a possible fix.
