SAS drives on a SATA Controller

ok, here is a question for you all. Is it possible to mod a SATA cable, and connect it to a SAS drive. From what Im reading, they are interchangeable (at least SATA to SAS), and that SAS as a second data path to the drive (hence the differnence in the connector) for redundency.

sas connector:

sata connector:

The second path to the drive is on the other side of the connector. If I mod either the physical drive, or a SATA cable (and a power cable), so i can attach it to the SAS drive, will it work?

I have a spare 73gb 15K sas drive here im not using right now, and I might try it and see what happens. Im about 99% sure that the pin out on both connectors is the same, except that the SAS drive has the extra 5 pins for the second data path.

Just food for thought.

Thanks!

Did it work? I want to use a SATA cable for my SAS drives as the damn SAS cable is way to expensive.. At least to check if the SAS controller works to boot form, then i might get a proper SAS cable..
