So, got my MacBook Pro yesterday (first real Mac, woo!) and I'm loving it.

One problem: Getting it to print to a shared Windows Printer.

It's a two+ year old HP OfficeJet G85 attached to my Windows XP PC. I can access shared files on that PC just fine. However, I cannot get my MacBook to print properly to the printer.

I can go through the Windows Printing portion of the Printer Setup Utility and find the printer, but there are no model-specific drivers for the printer and everything I print is four lines of gibberish and a million blank pages.

The official HP drivers are no help to me, as the Setup Utility thing can't "see" the shared printer, even when I manually type the name or IP address of it. And those HP "drivers", once installed, don't show up in the list in Printer Setup Utility.

So any ideas on how to make this work? I've read some things on the Internet about emulating a PostScript printer with GhostScript, but is that really necessary?

EDIT: BTW, is this the right forum for this? I wasn't really paying attention very well when I posted.

Maybe you just need an updated driver? Try Gutenprint 5.0.0.U from

http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3

For a list of supported printers see

http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3

You can configure the printer from a web browser in Mac OS X using http://localhost:631/printers/
