apple tech geek
hello good day. i got a free hp elitebook 8740w the other day and from googling around i have seen people getting os x running. problem is these are very old posts and no proper tutorials or anyone giving any info whatsoever about the kexts used. this laptop (mine) has a core i5 560m with 8 gb of ram and a amd radeon hd 5800 series mobile. not sure which mode.. i cant figure it out which precise after testing i found out that gpu is the only gpu in the system so the gpu is wired to the display directly what version of mac os should i install in this system? if possible would mojave work? and if not mavericks would be a preferred os although i've never had luck doing vanilla el capitan and below hackintoshes. it is currently running windows xp so i can mess around with it. i have access to mac os and most mac os install copies Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/344833-need-some-tips-for-hp-elitebook-8740w/ Share on other sites
apple tech geek
no problem. normally i have a general idea what kexts to use by looking at people's attemps but the only attemps for this device appear to be mavericks at its best. but nobody indicated what kexts/utilities they used. i know the general. FakeSMC, VoodooPS2Controller, VoodooTSCSync NullCPUPowerManagement, GenericUSBXHCI but any specific ones for my device i'm a bit in the dark. then a small 2nd problem for some reason all my sierra and high sierra copies are somehow invalid or something. any tips? apple tech geek
okay got a update. i installed the usual kexts. and some extra drivers like hfs and apfs. (since the install partition didnt show up) i made the disk a uefi disk. but maybe i need to make it legacy instead? the bios states the uefi mode is experimental. and i have to manually select the boot.efi file to get it to load clover. anyways. the system appears to instantly reboot the moment it starts loading anything from mac os after the initial clover load process (see attached image. after that it instantly reboots) i am using a usb 2 device. and after some googling around i read somewhere that the usb 2 ports dont work but usb 3 does. (altho this was os x snow leopard area so not sure if any of that is stil accurate) here is my current clover setup. i have enabled the lapic patch aswel besides -v i have added no other boot arguments. i've never worked with hp. or amd graphics before. so this is a little bit of a new spot for me.
