Wowfunhappy
I really, really like OS X Mavericks. But you can't install it on modern hardware, so I'm trying to use ESXI instead. I want this to feel as "native" as possible, so GPU passthrough is a must! I'm using a ESXI 6.7u3 on a Skylake machine, and I'm trying to passthrough either my GTX 780 Ti or my GTX 780 6GB, both of which should theoretically be supported OOTB on Mavericks. Unfortunately, they both behave the exact same way: When a boot a High Sierra VM, GPU passthrough works (basically) perfectly. The system outputs to my real monitor via HDMI, and the card appears in System Profiler as either a GTX 780 Ti or a GTX 780 (depending on which one I have installed in my machine). I was also able to run Tomb Raider 2013, so I definitely have full acceleration. Unfortunately however, I can't seem to get passthrough working in Mavericks. The VM boots, and my monitor briefly flashes "signal searching" as though something is about to happen, but only black is ever displayed. OS X only shows one display as connected, and my GPU is listed in System Profiler as "nVidia Chip Model". I've been more-or-less banging my head against the wall for the past week, and at this point, I'm very stuck. Is there anything else I can try to get my GPU working in Mavericks? What could be different between Mavericks and High Sierra that causes only one to work? Please let me know if there are any logs/configs/etc that would be helpful! I'm also more than willing to buy different/more graphics cards if there's a substantial chance it will make a difference, but I'd also like to avoid wantonly burning money . Thank you so much! Wowfunhappy
17 minutes ago, Hervé said: if you Google for GTX 780 in Mavericks, you'll see lots of reports of issues, especially for the Ti model which was poorly supported not to say unsupported, at least with Apple's native drivers. No personal experience on the matter but make sure you run the latest Mavericks 10.9.5 build, then try to install the Nvidia Web Driver applicable for the 10.9.5 build you run. Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm on 10.9.5 already, and installing the web driver doesn't seem to have any effect (but, I've confirmed the kexts are getting loaded). The reports you're referring to are why I bought a 780 after initially getting a 780 Ti for this project. Although there are some reports of people having trouble with the 780—particularly with regard to CUDA—there seemed to be agreement that the card basically worked. And 780 even those issues were apparently fixed with 10.9.5. That said, I'm more than willing to buy a third card if you think there's a substantial chance it will fix the problem. I want to be using the most powerful card I possibly can... if the 780 Ti and 780 are both out, should I get a 770? Or something else?
