dmk
My Dell E1505 came with the incompatible with OSX Intel wireless card, so I purchased a used 1390 TrueMobile Dell card on eBay and installed it over the summer. All was well for a while, then suddenly about a month ago the network went all haywire. My hard-wired PCs in the house work great, but now the laptop is acting funny. I installed Vista along with OSX 10.4.8 and dual boot it. The network and internet is sometimes lightning fast, as it should be. Both OS'es report a strong signal. But then usually sooner than later, or sometimes even immediately after a cold or warm reboot, the network throughput slows to a CRAWL. I'm talking 30 seconds to open a webpage that takes 1-2 seconds on a hard wired computer, and around 2 minutes to copy a couple megs of data over the internal LAN. It does this in BOTH operating systems, Vista AND OSX, and persists even after a cold or warm reboot. As I said, sometimes it DOES work fast, but 90% of the time it crawls. It's random. I tried a brand new router to ensure it wasn't that. It's doing the same thing with a brand new, different brand router. So now I'm left with the network card -- Is this the symptom of a failing network card? Do bad network cards do this? I'm considering switching back to the Intel card for a while just to test it with Vista, tho it won't work in OSX -- I could always buy a new 1390 I guess. Anyone have any advice? I'd really appreciate it. Or if there's another cheaper wireless I can try to install in this lappy I'd love to do that too. Thanks for any advice. I'd love to hear from someone else who has experienced this. dooododoo
Might be your router. After I upgraded the firmware for my Linksys router to the latest one, its wireless signal would disconnect randomly. Try getting a new wirelss router if it bothers you that much. Mine does it about every day and a half, and I can live with it. dmk
Charles, I thought that may be it too -- But it's done this on 2 totally different routers now. Two different brands and everything. I just hooked the brand new one up and even installed DD-WRT on it. Same result on the Buffalo router as with the old Netgear router. So I am fairly sure I have eliminated the router as the cause.
