High Sierra boot loop in VMware Workstation Player

I'm trying to setup macOS High Sierra VM's so that I can develop software for Mac without having to reboot so often. I managed to get High Sierra working in VMware Fusion 10, and am now trying to get it to work in VMware Workstation Player 14 (unlocked). However, the installer boot never finishes. It gets as far as the Apple logo and a little movement in the progress bar, then loops back to a black screen, the VMware logo, and back at the Apple logo, forever.

Any tips on how to fix this? I followed several different online tutorials, even patching my VMware with the unlocker, specifying `smc.version = "0"` in the VMX, and so on, but the darn VM still has trouble booting.

Also posting this to Reddit, Stack Exchange, tonymacx86, and osx86.net in case those communities can help, too!
