Jagojon3
I currently have 10.4.6 installed on my Dell E1405 and it works ok, but I want to upgrade to 10.4.8 and run the nebukadnezar (or however you spell it =P) because it supposedly has dual core support working and I want OS X to run a bit faster than it does now. I remember seeing somewhere not to do software update from the OS, why is that? It lists 10.4.8 as an update that I can download, will that not work if I download it and try to update? I have the JAS 10.4.8 install DVD but I just get a black screen when I boot from it, so I'm wondering if there is an easy way to update without completely reinstalling OS X. Callysto
without a DVD to install from you at least need a dual boot system. Either windows or a separate mac installation you can then extract the files for the upgrade onto the mac install and add the kernel then boot into single user mode and apply any necessary patches and/or repiair permissions. to be honest it's complicated but not impossible
Jagojon3
So basically you're saying it's easier to just to a clean reinstall with the newer version? {censored}, that's what I was afraid of
consolation
So basically you're saying it's easier to just to a clean reinstall with the newer version? {censored}, that's what I was afraid of no you, don't there is a simple way: -Download the Intel Apple combo update for 10.4.8 from Apple. -Download onyx, set it to show hidden files -Download the latest kernel, it will come with the Applesmbios.kext now, run the apple update DO NOT REBOOT trash the old kernel and replace it with the new one move the AppleSmbios.kext into extensions delete the kext caches repair permissions tell onyx to hide hidden files reboot Full tutorial in the Genius bar I think. BTW, first time it boots your hacky will work hard and reboot before getting to the login screen, don't panic -that's normal. It will boot normally after that. Jagojon3
Is the Intel Apple combo update the one that I get directly though the software update feature in OS X? Where do I get the latest kernel? Sorry if these questions sound really stupid...

Where do I get the latest kernel? Sorry if these questions sound really stupid... 1) I'd go get it directly from Apple's website... search for intel combo update 10.4.8 2) irc ("live chat" link on top of the board) got to the kernel channel, when you join you will see a linky 3) nah... this forum is awash with contradictory information; usually because there is more than one way to skin a cat. Jagojon3
Is that nebukanezar the latest kernel? How do I trash the old kernel and replace it with the new one? Don't I always need one running to have the OS run? How do I delete the kext caches? I'm not sure what those are. Which permissions do I need to repair and how do I do it? Thanks again for your help
Jagojon3
Actually I got the JaS10.4.8 install working on my Dell laptop using an external monitor, now I just need to get dual core support working.
