How to make bootable clone of HD (on USB HD)?

I have two laptops running OSX, a Compaq nc4200 and a Dell D620.

Both run fine and recognise USB disks without any problem. Both are also set to boot from a USB disk first if present.

I have tried using Carbon Copy cloner to try to make complete bootable backups on USB disks. I was able to make a full copy but it didn't boot. I am fairly familiar with cccloner and I had set the bootable option.

I then tried making a fresh installation of OSX on the disk then overwriting it using cccloner. On the nc4200 it booted and ran from the USB disk the first time I tried it, but thereafter booted from the USB disk but mounted the internal HD as root. On the D620 it was slightly harder to tell (it only has OSX on it so the boot screens look similar but my nc4200 triple boots XP, FC5 and OSX using grub so it's easy to tell) but it appeared to be booting from the USB HD but again mounting the internal HD as root.

I tried playing around with the bless command but without any noticeable effect.

Has anyone else succeeded in doing this? If so how?

tried disk utility restore and does not work either.
