I've got a pretty solid installation using the 10.4.6 (JaS) DVD.

I'm using a Gateway ELP 500s with the following specifications:

- Pentium 4 1.4 GHz (SSE2)

- 1.12 GB SDRAM (64 + 512 + 512)

- Unsure of motherboard/chipset

- 40 GB Western Digital HDD (2 partitions, 10 GB + 27 GB)

- Hewlett Package DVD/RW

- On-board Audio (Intel 82801BM AC-97) *

- NVidia GeForce2 MX200 (32 MB RAM) *

- On-board Ethernet (Unsure)

- Dell 2007WFP LCD monitor

Initially as most people have trouble with, the audio and the video didn't work at 100%. I tried to follow the listed instructions for correcting the AC97 sound, but with no success. This is still an issue. The video initially would only accept 1024x768x32 mode. I tried the Macvidia 1.08 installer, but it left me with a Kernel Panic at reboot. After a manual removal per their instructions, I installed 1.07. Upon the first reboot, I got another Kernel Panic but this time once I went into System Preferences > Display. After one reboot, it's been working rock solid. I now have it setup using 1600x1050x32 resolution on my 20" Dell wide screen LCD. Also, the on-board Ethernet worked "out of the box".

I've been installing several software packages to see what I can run. I've tried Bittorrent and Tomato Torrent clients. Bittorent loaded, I was able to open it, but then I got the rotating color circle. Tomato Torrent was not responding at all on startup. Safari has worked just fine. Firefox 2.0 installed and runs flawlessly several times through my various installations. I've installed several of the extensions and they also work just fine. AdiumX 0.89 has installed and seems to work just fine for chatting purposes. iTunes works using the "PPC method", found here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...;p=208481

What I'd really like to try and see if I have troubles with is Adobe Creative Suite. Does anyone have information on this? Will it work or not?

I have run XBench, received a score of ~27. Pretty lame considering a good score is what - 60 ? I didn't expect high performance on a box of this nature.

Overall, I'm quite pleased. Not knowing {censored} about OS X and a moderate amount about Unix/Linux, I've been through maybe 4 installations before I was satisfied.

As mentioned about, I still have the issue with the on-board sound. Does anyone have further suggestions about this?

I wanted to share my experience with the community... Thanks in advance for anyone with help.
