I've been trying hard to make my Hackintosh be able to use microphone input via the 3.5mm input. I've started out with an Asus z170-A board (ALC892), where sound was working, the microphone displayed, but no input came through. I've tried a bunch of different audio solutions ranging but couldn't make it work.

I've then switched to an Gigabyte Z170 HD3P board (ALC887), which is more common. I was hoping this would make the problem disappear, but didn't. I've now tried everything from ##### to AppleALC to VoodooHDA to what I am using now, a custom patched AppleHDA kext, with I tried with Audio IDs 1,5,7&9. Each of these solutions made the audio work, but the microphone never works. I'm testing using standard Apple Headphones with the integrated mic.

Anyone? You'd really help me out. Would a USB mic work?

I found out the solution! Much to my surprise it actually turned out to be a hardware issue. The iPhone headphones come with a TRRS 3.5mm jack for both Input/Output in one plug. When I plugged these into my motherboards or cases mic jack, they didn't pass any input through. I just bought a standalone mic which comes with a TRS jack, which works just fine. Surprisingly the input quality in my hack is actually better than on the windows installation.

I then tested the iPhone headphones on my windows installation, which gave the same issue as OSX did all the while before, confirming it's entirely a hardware problem.
