hi guys, i have dell laptop dual core with latest config, it came with mediacentre edition OS.

now i want to install mac os, when i tried it with 10.4.6 release, all went fine but at the time of formatting the drive to mac os extended journaled, it kept saying...couldnot read partition map

what does it mean? what should i do now?

can any one help me how to install mac os without a problem and start using it?

i tried installing it many times... no use...

waiting for a help pls......

did that for me too, i think it has something to do with mediadirect (if you have a dell) and the weird partition hiding stuff

try making a partition of type AF from another tool like fdisk, and then go to disk utility and formatting it to hfs+ (mac os extended journalled)

Try this, I had the same problem. Delete the entire drive, followed by creating a large partition of a MSDOS, then remake it as a Mac OS partititon.

i am scared to do that, i will lose all my information, as i dont have the option of backing it up at present, i wil do it at the end if nothing works up......

any other idea of how to get it working? that drive is not mounting to get formatted with mac os extended journaled type.... simply saying that couldnot read partition map.....

i had the same problem, and using partition magic only fuxx0red things up even more. in xp, install acronis disk director and format the partition that osx will go on as fat32, then right click on it and force set the type to shaqos swap. its 0xAF or somethin as you go down the list. i would recommend installing the acronis os selector (in the start menu after you install disk director) then reboot and run the osx dvd boot and install and it should work. make sure you select the correct Customize options right before you start the actual install, and then figure out later how to get rid of the acronis os selector because it adds a lot of time to the system bootup

(by fdisk i mean fdisk under linux btw, not the mac one, that one's weird)

(not the windows one, that one's also weird)

anyways, if you don't feel its too much trouble, you can get a linux livecd, boot off of it, do "fdisk /dev/hda" (or sda, depending on what kind of hard disk you have), then look up the help instructions for creating a partition and setting its type

oh and if you have your windows partition taking up the hard disk, you can try resizing it with partition magic or defragging and use ntfstools on linux...

or use arconis... though i never tried it

elislider: you can probably overwrite the boot sector of the hard disk with the windows or mac one..
