Is it possible to use DD to write the tiger-x86-flat image to a USB harddisk and boot from it. So i transferred the tiger-x86-flat image using DD to my external 40Gb USB harddisk and it worked. Now i simply boot from the USB and work on it directly. I successfull installed it on a laptop drive which I put in a USB enclosure. It boots from it, but no matter what settings (-v -s -x etc.) I add at boot up it always fails with the 'looking for root device' error . I'm using a Dell Lattitude D600. Have you got any tips ? I believe this is an issue with the chipset you are using on your enclosure. I have tried this external drive booting on 4 different enclosures and so far i have yet to get it to sucessfully booted on a 2.5 inch drive enclosure. It boots fine on 3 other drive enclosures i have but not on this particular 2.5 inch drive enclosure. I am using the same exact dd image on all 4 enclosures. I might be getting my hands on a 2.5 inch drive an my abe able to test on a different chipset that will conclusively solve the question if it boots on a different chipset 2.5 inch drive enclosure. degreecy Posted October 14, 2005 Share Posted October 14, 2005 what is interesting is that installing from the Generic DVD Installer works for awhile. It allows booting from the USB HD install I've created. After a few re-boots it then goes back to the Root Device error. Not sure why it is working initially then not working all of a sudden. It works perfectly if I put it in as the master HD in the laptop though...
