Cannot install software or 'browse' contents of CD's

Hi there.

 

I know this is an installation forum, but I could not see anywhere more approiate to post this.

 

I have OSx86 10.4.1 installed on my laptop and everything seems to be working fine. However when I put a CD in it appears on the desktop as expected, but when I double click on it, the icons on the desktop disappear momentarily and nothing else happens (i.e. doesn't show the contents of the CD). This is making it difficult to install software. The same happens if I try clicking on it from within finder.

 

I've tried to use the installer in utilities to install the software but this didn't work either.

 

Has anybody else had this problem or have a suggestion for fixing it??

[edit] I have tried a few different CD's with no luck, so it isn't a bad CD or anything like that..
