Perry44
I have a few questions about S-Video. First, im not sure if my iMac Intel Core Duo has S-Video support? How can I check? If it does, would an S-Video cord like This allow me to watch TV on my iMac? If that would work, would I need software to watch TV? Thanks. Thanks. to get s-video support, you need an adapter like this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebO...rnMore=M9267G/A then you could okug the s-video cable into that and hook your tv into that. as for watching tv (live tv i presume?), you'll need a tv tuner and software to use that tuner with: http://www.macminicenter.com/wiki/index.ph...ware:TV_and_PVR depends on what type of cable (analog/digital?) or satellite, or whatever as to which one you need. Perry44
Ah. On that Apple adapter it says you need a MacBook Pro, Mac mini or Power Mac G5; I have an iMac. Is that a big deal? If not, if I buy this tuner: http://elgato.com/index.php?file=products_...&newlang=en What else would I need? Would I still need the S-Video Adapter and the S-Video cord? Thanks. rollcage
yeah, that adapter will still work if you want it. all those systems use the same connector, not sure why they wouldn't put it on the list. if you go under the imac and look at the video options, they list that adapter. if you just want to watch your tv on your mac's screen, you don't need the s-video adapter and cable. you only need that if you want to watch it on another screen. the one you have picked out comes with all the software, so you should be all set with that. just checking to make sure that thing will actually work for you, what country do you live in? Perry44
I live in Ohio, United States. Also, I see the one I like supports HDTV and Digital Cable, what If I only have standard cable? Can I still get digital and hdtv? thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30328-s-video/#findComment-210182 Share on other sites
rollcage
well, i think that first one you were showing me won't work in the us, it's for a broadcast type only in europe. i haven't been able to find a tuner for both analog and digital, and i don't know what to tell you to use right now for digital cable/satellite (i'll keep looking for a good option). for regular analog cable, i like this option: http://www.miglia.com/products/video/evolutiontv/index.html hey 200 posts Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30328-s-video/#findComment-210192 Share on other sites
Perry44
That looks nice, and is cheap. Sorry if I missed, but what kind of TV does that support? Analog only? thanks. Also, it says pause, rewind, record and skip forward live TV. How in the world would you skip forward live TV Thanks for all your help so far Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30328-s-video/#findComment-210199 Share on other sites
rollcage
actually, it looks like my original idea of this thing was wrong, and for the better it says that it will support most digital tv receivers, along with the regular analog tv. it also has rca and s-video inputs though, so you could plus your VCR or whatever into it and record onto your mac and burn to a dvd or transfer to ipod. it won't really skip foward LIVE tv, but if you record say, a football game and watch it later, you could skip through the commercials. another nice thing i like about this one is that you can record the tv directly into ipod format, so you can take it on the go later in case you don't want it on your mac. the software side looks good, ical integration for scheduling recording, tv guide, etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/30328-s-video/#findComment-210209 Share on other sites
Perry44
Thanks. So would you reccomend I go with http://www.miglia.com/products/video/evolutiontv/index.html or http://elgato.com/index.php?file=products_...&newlang=en? I like how the second one allows hdtv aswell as digital but i am not sure if I can use the hdtv and digital cable, as that is not what my home has. rollcage
the second one would only work if you live in europe. it requires dtt, a broadcast type that it uses isn't available in the us. so that kind of kills that one for an option. i'd go with the miglia one. i'm not sure if it will record in hdtv, it doesn't say what resolutions it supports with encoding, but from what i can tell you'll get at leasts dvd quality. that won't matter much anyway if your house doesn't get hdtv, you'll only get as good as qaulity as what your cable provides. to get hdtv, you have to get an hdtv show, cable(satellite) provider, hdtv tuner, and a tv that supports high-def. Perry44
Alright, excellent. The Miglia one looks nice, I love it sfeatures (iCal etc). One last question about S-Video.. I will not need an S-Video cable for this, would I? S-Video is only for putting my computer contents on my TV, correct? Also, With that Miglia product, do I need to screw cable directly into it? If so is there a wire I can buy that splits cable lines? Like I screw the wire on the end of one cable line and it has two cable jacks on the other end so I can run one to t he miglia product and the other to my smaller tv? Thanks. rollcage
right, you don't need the s-video thing. it's only for putting your computer contents on your tv. as for splitting the cable, something like this will work: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Cable-TGHZ-2...s/dp/B00003CWG2 you probably don't need to order that one, if you go to walmart (should be in electronics with the tv cables and stuff), radioshack, etc. or just ask them. they should have one for less than getting it off amazon.
