VIA VT1708S SPDIF/Optical

I am trying to use optical audio with the onboard sound (VIA VT1708S). I've set it up using VoodooHDA 2.8.6 and wether that's the best version I'm unsure but am sure you can point me in the correct direction. I checked the settings in Audio MIDI Setup, VoodooHDA (pref) and Sound (pref) and it does work but not for long. Sound is emitted but it's jerky and laggy then the computer locks up.

 

When the pc crashes it locks up completely and needs rebooting. No errors or kernel panic screen just frozen. I can induce the crash on queue so it's not a big issue as it's controlled and not spontaneous.

 

If you're wondering analogue sound works fine (poor quality but works good enough).
