theorange Posted July 18, 2014 Share Posted July 18, 2014 Hey guys, so, I'm trying to do a dual boot with 10.9 and windows 8. I have one usb loaded with os x 10.9 and clover, andanother one with a windows 8 installer. I put the mac usb in to use disk util to partition my 2tb drive into a 500gb mac os journaled partition and left 1.5tb free space to install windows on. When I go into the windows installer, everything goes fine, I can select the empty space to install on, then when I get to installing, as soon is it starts, I get this error message: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0xC0000005 Since 0xC0000005 is a memory access problem, I ran memcheck86+ for a couple passes, and it didn't spot anything wrong with my memory. I also updated my bios to the latest version, neither solved the problem. I made a windows 7 installer usb as well, thinking I would just install 7 then use the upgrade assistant to move to 8, I got the same error when installing windows 7. Anyone know how to fix this? fusion71au Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 @theorange, How did you create your Windows installer? If it is for UEFI install, it needs to be FAT32 formatted, not NTFS. theorange Posted July 19, 2014 Author Share Posted July 19, 2014 Hmm, I had no idea, I think it was formatted with FAT32, but I'm not sure. I'll give it a check. Thanks for the help! I formated the windows 7 usb with FAT32 for sure, because I created it manually. I used the windows 8 upgrade tool from another computer to create the win8 usb. Since 8 was designed with uefi in mind, I'm guessing the installer formats as FAT32, but I'm not sure. Neither worked anyways, so I don't think that's the problem. Just wondering, do you happen to know why NTFS doesn't work with a UEFI install? theorange Posted July 19, 2014 Author Share Posted July 19, 2014 I just read up on it, apparently most implementations of uefi don't even support booting from an ntfs drive, which apparently my board, the asus z97-pro, does, because when I choose boot device, my ntfs flash drives are flagged as ntfs but still boot fine. Also, I got way past booting from the usb, it boots just fine. The problem is when I actually start the install process, that's when the error pops up. Or maybe I'm just wrong, because if uefi didn't support ntfs, then you wouldn't be able to boot a windows drive... fusion71au Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 @theorange, AFAIK, you need FAT32 for the Windows uefi bootloader (bootmgfw.efi) and its BCD store. I suspect when you are booting your NTFS flash drives, it is in legacy BIOS mode (check your BIOS settings to see if it is UEFI only or autodetect). Re your installer issues: Check the integrity of your Windows 8 iso eg check MD5/SHA1 # value of the download Maybe try remaking the installer on a different USB drive using the guide I linked before Insert the USB into a different port (say USB2) Good Luck! theorange Posted July 19, 2014 Author Share Posted July 19, 2014 I already tried redownloading both 7 and 8 earlier today, and moving the new copies to the usbs. Neither of the new downloads worked, unfortunately. The usb drive that I put windows 8 on was brand new, I took it out of the packaging and used upgrade assistant to put the installer on it. I was thinking it might've been a problem with having a mac partition on the drive as well, so I tried installing windows on another hard drive that I had in the system, totally blank disk. It didn't work there either, though.
