If you find for some reason that you can't boot the OSX install DVD or for some reason the install hangs, you might need to bypass all of that by installing to your hard drive using VMWare. When you are done installing, you no longer need VMWare.

If you need to use VMWare to install, you are going to need Windows to run it.

If you are installing OSX as the only OS on the whole drive, you should format the whole drive as FAT32 first. This will establish the needed MBR partition scheme. There will be a tiny partition with the boot sectors and a large partition available for OSX. Then as part of the OSX installation, you format the large partition (not the hard drive) as HFS+.
