3.14r2 Posted September 21, 2012 Share Posted September 21, 2012 It might be that the external HDD is not OK (check it with the manufacturer provided tools, just to be sure). BTW, what is the file system on the external HDD? IMO 5 or 35 sec. is not a huge difference, like between 5 sec. and 3 minutes for instance. I'd recommend checking it. You can also try to connect a different drive and see how it goes. If the same story, than it's probably has something to do with the OS X itself, rather then with the hardware.
